The Okoro Harold Johnson School of Performing Arts honors the legacy of Okoro Harold Johnson, a visionary artist, educator, and cultural leader who co-founded eta Creative Arts Foundation in 1969 alongside Abena Joan Brown. The school name reflects a commitment to artistic excellence, Black cultural expression, community empowerment, and intergenerational arts education.

The Okoro Harold Johnson School of Performing Arts is dedicated to cultivating emerging artists through rigorous training in theater, music, dance, spoken word, and creative expression. Inspired by the legacy of Okoro Harold Johnson, the school centers Black storytelling, cultural preservation, and artistic innovation while preparing students to lead on stage and in their communities.

The reviews are in and they have really been amazing!!!!!

This past year, the organization has focused on re-engaging our alumni and the communities we intend to serve.

For those new here, eta’s mission has always been to provide professional opportunities through performance and on the job training for the development of both youth and adults as artists and technicians, as well as telling our stories “in first voice,” and elevating and supporting Black playwrights!

Through this amazing original work, “A Lot to Unpack,” written and directed by eta alum and lifetime achievement award recipient, Rueben D. Echoles, we have done just that!

The fulfillment of so many dreams. Professional performance opportunities for our amazing actors, lighting designers, stage and house managers, directors and assistant directors, light and sound techs, etc. Producing an original work to this stage and highlighting the genius of its writer. And the icing on the cake is the community engagement, the representation, the support and positive feedback from our community!

When you purchase tickets and invite a friend, this is the mission you are supporting. This is more than entertainment (but it is extremely entertaining 😃) - this is community, impactful, and life changing for so many!

We look forward to seeing you all for closing weekend as we end this amazing run!! We are beyond grateful for your support!
