Where Y'all At Though joins us this Thursday, August 20 for BOYZ N THE HOOD, part of our Summer Classic Film Series “Debuts” theme celebrating directors who got it right on the very first try 🎬

And John Singleton certainly did. At just 23 years old, Singleton became the youngest person ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director (and the first Black filmmaker nominated in the category) for his powerful debut.

Columbia Pictures wanted Singleton’s script but initially wanted someone else to direct. Singleton refused, insisting that only someone who truly knew South Central could tell the story authentically saying, "Hell, no, I'm not gonna let somebody from Idaho or Encino direct a movie about living in south-central Los Angeles. They can't come in here and cast it and go through the re-writes and know exactly what aesthetics are unique to this film."
