People on your team think they know what everyone else does all day.
They are ridiculously mistaken.

And those assumptions are killing teamwork.

There is a 15-minute exercise that fixes that.

It costs nothing, requires zero budget, and consistently produces the moment where someone finally says "I had no idea you were dealing with that."

That moment matters more than most leaders realize.

Because empathy is not a soft skill.

It is the thing that makes accountability actually work.

When people understand what their teammates are carrying, they stop making assumptions and start making room for each other.

Watch the video for the full exercise.

Try it at your next team meeting.

Then let me now how it went!

Everyone starts out coachable…

Then somewhere between the first promotion and the third "we've always done it this way," something quietly shifts.

You stop asking the questions that got you here.
And without even noticing, you get stuck.

After 20 years of coaching teams, I can tell you that staying coachable is not a personality trait. It is a practice.

And it comes down to four questions most leaders never think to ask themselves.

Watch the video.
They take about 30 seconds to learn and a lifetime to master.

And if your team is navigating change and needs more than a pep talk, grab a copy of Staying Coachable on Amazon or reach out about bringing an interactive experience to your next event.

Your team did not get stuck overnight.

But they can get unstuck faster than you think.

Your team just got back from the escape room.
Everyone had fun.

And by Thursday, nobody is talking about it.

That is not bad luck.
That is an event is designed for entertainment instead of awareness.

I have spent 20 years facilitating teams and watching organizations spend real money on experiences that produced zero behavior change. The problem is almost never the activity. It is the absence of intention, skilled facilitation, and a debrief that connects what happened in the room to what needs to change at work.

I wrote a full breakdown of why this happens and what it takes to design an experience that actually sticks.

If you are planning a team event in the next six months, read this before you book anything.

I put two of my own books on this list.

That either means I'm ridiculously confident they are helpful, or I have no shame.
Probably both.

But here's the truth: nobody hands you a reading list when they hand you a leadership title. They just expect you to figure it out.

I spent twenty years coaching teams before I ever stepped into a conference room as a speaker or facilitator.

These five books are the ones I wish someone had handed me at the start.

They cover trust, interpersonal behaviors, psychological safety, honest feedback, and the mindset shift that separates effective leaders from just busy ones.

Watch the video for the full list and why each one matters.

And if your team needs a memorable experience – not just a reading list - I help organizations build sticky cultures.

Let’s talk.

86% of employees say lack of collaboration causes workplace failures.
Not 86% of bad companies. Not 86% of struggling startups.
86% of employees.

In every Industry.

So here's the uncomfortable question nobody wants to ask out loud:
If almost everyone agrees collaboration is broken... why is the solution always another Slack channel?

The problem isn't the individuals.
It's the space between them.
The unspoken tensions. The assumptions.
The silos nobody talks about in the all-hands meeting.

You don't fix that with a memo.

You fix it with experiences that make people actually SEE each other differently.

That's what intentional team building does.
Watch the video.

Ready to close the collaboration gap on your team?

Let's talk.

The best leaders learn this quickly –
As a coach, it was something that took me a while to realize…

The most talented group doesn’t always win.

In fact, sometimes toxic talent can sabotage team performance.

Yes, you NEED talent to win. But the teams that win consistently – in basketball AND in business - are the ones where people actually make each other better.

Winning teammates share appreciation.
They respect everyone's time.
They notice when someone else is struggling and do something about it.

None of that shows up on a resume. But all of it shows up in results.

If you want to know what separates good teams from great ones, it's the quality of teammates in your organization.

Watch the video.

And if you want your whole team thinking this way, my book is a great place to start.

Your team doesn't need a pizza party.
They need actual tools.

Tools for better communication. Tools for real accountability.
Tools for running a team meeting that improves your culture.

So I created over 60 of them.
Organized them around everything a great team culture needs.

And then I made them free.

You're welcome ; )

Four respected researchers in psychology spent their careers studying what people actually need to bring their best effort to work.

Erikson studied the questions people ask about trust and belonging.
Seligman studied what makes people genuinely thrive.
Edmondson studied why smart people go quiet on high-performing teams.
Schein studied how the real norms of a workplace get built.

Their findings point to the same conclusion:
People do not underperform because they lack clarity or consequences.

They underperform because unresolved human needs quietly get in the way.

And every single one of those needs maps directly to the G.R.E.A.T. culture framework I have used with teams at Cisco, John Deere, the CDC, and hundreds of other organizations and leaders.

I wrote about all four researchers this week - and exactly what their work means for how you lead your team...

If you build teams for a living, this one is worth your time.

I hear a lot about leaders having an open-door policy.
But they never actually ask the question that opens the door to real conversations.

There is a powerful question that changes that.
(if you ask it in the right setting)

Watch the video.

One question. A few private conversations.
And suddenly you know exactly what your team has been waiting for someone to fix.

Fair warning though. Once you ask, you cannot unhear the answers.

Only try this if you actually want to get better.

Yes – every team needs talent.
But the limiting issue is almost never that.

After 20 years working with teams on basketball courts and in boardrooms, the pattern is clear. The teams that struggle don't lack skill.

They lack connection.

Silos form.
Communication breaks down. People quit.

Toxic culture is the number one reason people leave a job.
Not pay. Not benefits. Culture.

The fix isn't a pizza party.
