The brief: a light well rounded all weather North American big game hunting rifle. Something that works for whitetail to sheep to elk to caribou to bears. A common cartridge that you can get ammo anywhere. And a classic look on a reasonable budget.
The selection: A Wi******er Repeating Arms classic stainless in 30.06. A McMillan Stocks molded in "timber" in a classic wi******er pattern. A SWAROVSKI OPTIK Hunting z5i 3.5-18×44 scope held down by Leupold Optics std series rings.
The work: To assemble this amalgamation of quality components, tune the trigger to a crisp 3lbs, test 18 commercially available hunting loads from Wi******er Ammunition Federal Premium Hornady SIG SAUER Hunting Swift Bullet Company and sight it all in.

Not too shabby! This Wi******er Repeating Arms model 94 in 30-30 from 1901 shoots great. We were brought this old 94 to install a rear sight and figure out what ammo if any it liked. It shot best with Federal Premium fusion 170 grain. This a 3 shot group at 100yds, bullseye is 1" and circle is 3" for reference. Not bad for open sights, factory ammo and a 125 year old rifle!

Almost there.......This BERETTA 686 silver pigeon forend came in broken. Luckily its a clean break and all the pieces are there. We use a proper wood glue and claps to glue it. Use a No. 57 drill bit as a permanent pin to reinforce the break. Then to cut back the chipped finish, blend a touch of stain, add finish, cut back, clean up checkering, and polish. Unfortunately we didn't get an after picture when it was all done.

After yesterday evening's heavy rain, Rigby went for his last run of the day down to the creek and met a new friend. First snapping turtle we've seen since we moved to this property 8 years ago. He was covered in enough silt to be mistaken as a rock when we got down to the creek.

Some jobs make you want to cry.......on the inside at least. The Re*****on model 11 shotgun was produced under license from Browning and during WWII many were diverted after production into the war effort pipeline. Most had the barrels chopped and used in closer quarters or by prisoner guards. A few got tossed in artillery cockpits stateside at various training facilities to get gunners used to shooting at aerial targets but without the artillery shells that would make a nearby town in the Midwest think they were being invaded. Our best guess is that this gun was the latter with a factory 26" barrel that bore the ordinance stamps to match its receiver. Unfortunately the client wanted it chopped to 22".....so we did it......with our eyes closed (see no evil) and a small part of our almost soulless selves dying. Turned out nice but its no longer a survivor...

Understated....Elegant....Beautiful....Balanced....Timeless......All words that come to mind looking at this Longthorne Gunmakers 28ga over/under. This one was in for new firing pins and springs, along with a general refresh and cleaning. The Stewart's bucked the English tradition and took a surprisingly modern approach to a classic English sidelock. They manufacture the barrels not from individual tubes and lumps but rather from 1 solid block of steel or titanium. So no solder joints to tin or come loose. Likewise the action and its components are precision machined and polished to a nice even finish devoid of typical machine marks found on many cnc made fi****ms. The lock design is simple and easy to work on. Clean while remaining effective with crisp breaks to the trigger. There has been significant argument as to if it qualifies as a "best" gun but there is little denying that it is a "fine" gun in about every sense of the word.
