The Rylander Theatre

The Rylander Theatre A historic live performance theatre located in Downtown Americus, GA. The Rylander Theatre was built in 1921 by American businessman Walter Rylander.

It hosted the finest live entertainment and motion pictures before closing in 1951. Designed by C.K. Howell of New York, the Rylander was a visiual feast of ornate plaster work, beautiful stencil patterns, and painted murals. Closed for more than 40 years, and then restored and reopened in October 1999, the Rylander is nothing less than stunning and has once again reclaimed its titles as "The Finest Playhouse South of Atlanta." The Mission Statement of the Rylander:
The mission of the Rylander Theater is to provide the community and area visitors a theatre and meeting hall for dramatic and musical stage performances, motion pictures, and lectures, with its unique architecture, artistic legacy and social history to be interpreted through tours and other educational presentations.

We here at the Rylander Theatre are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former GSW Communications Professor (TCMA) and Sumter Player President/ Board Member Joey Watson, Ph.D. He bought the exiled fairytale creatures from the Swamp to the Rylander stage as Director of Shrek: The Musical. Joey also shot and directed GSW first feature film Which Way There, which premiered at the Theater in April 2017. The film included scenes filmed at the Rylander as well as other local businesses such as Perry Brothers Oil Co., the Windsor Hotel, and the Sumter Historic Trust. Joey will truly be missed.

The purpose of the Theater Technical Director classification within the Theater Operations department is to oversee the technical operations for the events in the Rylander Theater.
