Safe Harbour MENA is under way at the El Gouna Film Festival, running from Thursday 15 to Friday 23 October, with Head of IFFR Pro Marten Rabarts on the ground supporting the four selected filmmakers.

This is the first region-focussed edition of Safe Harbour, developed with the International Emerging Film Talent Fund (IEFTF) and launched at CineMart during IFFR 2026. Run with El Gouna Film Festival, Safe Harbour MENA supports emerging filmmakers displaced within the Middle East who face limited access to networks, funding and development opportunities.

The four filmmakers and their projects:

- The Search for Memory of a Lost Homeland dir. Hadi Bakhit (Sudan)
- Temporary Protection dir. Ezel Manay (Syria, Turkey)
- Sabary dir. Ahmed Nagm Eldin (Sudan, Rwanda, Mauritania)
- The Martyr’s Wedding dir. Yasir Faiz (Sudan, Kenya)

The programme has included a masterclass with Afghan-Dutch filmmaker Aboozar Amini, who is on the jury this year, and an in-conversation session with Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir (Palestine 36, IFFR 2026) – who is also supported for the next edition of the Displacement Film Fund.

Venice Silver Lion for HBF- and CineMart-backed Dau 🦁

Our congratulations to Dau by Ilya Khrzhanovsky who won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival for the CineMart-presented Dau.

Inspired by the Soviet physicists who built the atomic bomb, the epic Dau follows a Greek-born physicist in the USSR over four decades as his search for scientific truth is bent to the service of the state.

More than 20 years ago at IFFR 2004, Khrzhanovsky’s debut feature 4 won the Tiger Award. The following year the Hubert Bals Fund backed Dau with Development Support, and in 2006 the project was presented at CineMart.

Our congratulations to Nepalese filmmaker Abinash Bikram Shah, whose HBF-supported debut feature Elephants in the Fog won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.
