Q***r History Cumbria is a research project dedicated to exploring the history of LGBTQ+ people connected with Cumbria. We spoke to the project’s creator Neil Whalley; read the full interview and find out how you can get involved at the link in our bio.

🌈 What inspired you to undertake the project and website? 🌈

I’ve always wondered what my life might have been like as a gay Cumbrian if I’d been born at another time in history. Could I have led any sort of q***r life? It’s easy to assume that an isolated rural place like Cumbria would be too socially conservative for that but I wanted to see if there was any evidence of q***r lives here going back through history.

My aim was to create an easily accessible resource giving people an overview of the available information on Cumbria’s LGBTQ+ history and providing sources for them to do their own research. Broader LGBTQ+ histories often overlook rural communities like Cumbria, while local histories rarely consider q***rness. I wanted to fill that gap.

I think it’s important to share our q***r heritage to show that even a county like Cumbria has a history of diversity, which came with both tolerance and persecution. We’ve always been here.

Kendal First Friday bouldering 🧗✨

Good climbs, new friends, and amazing vibes 🌈 This month’s Kendal First Friday event was bouldering at Kendal Wall, before we headed to 98 Highgate for the social. Thanks to everyone who came along and made the evening so fun!

November’s event is speed sketching - more details soon!

We had so much fun bouldering that we are going to start a regular weekly session on Friday evenings. Fancy joining us? DM us and we’ll add you to the group chat 💌 Whether you’re a total beginner or a regular at the wall, come hang out and climb with us!

October’s First Friday will be preceded by an opportunity to try out bouldering at the Kendal Wall with Scout from 6pm.

This fun event caters to both experienced and first time climbers and we will be bouldering in a supportive environment. It’s a social, fun inclusive opportunity to climb with like minded LGBTQIA+ people.

🤝 Kendal First Friday 🧗 Regular meetup on the first Friday of every month organised by Kendal Pride . Meet at 98 Highgate at 8pm for the social. All welcome, just drop in and join us for a welcoming and friendly meetup of LGBTQIA+ folk. You also have the opportunity to try bouldering beforehand at Kendal climbing wall.
