FULL TIME: Tattenhoe Rangers Vets 1–2 Daventry Town Vets

Not exactly a textbook build-up.

Injuries everywhere, four no-shows this morning and a squad held together with tape and painkillers.

Daniel Mortimer came straight in for his debut at left-back, while injured trio Andy Priest, Justin Wiles and Gavin Vella all ended up lacing the boots anyway just to keep the squad numbers respectable.

Tattenhoe came into this one after a 7–0 win last week and had beaten us 4–1 here last season, and felt the 4G gave them a big advantage.

Daventry started well and got the breakthrough on 20 minutes when Rhyse Coleman, Gavin Vella and Simon Webber combined, with Webber putting the defender to ground with a delightful dummy and a mouthful of 4G black rubber before calmly finishing.
0–1.

Tattenhoe’s best chance of the half was brilliantly stopped by Darryl Pearce, who was having one of those mornings where getting the ball past him looked like hard work.

HT: 0–1

Second half, Daventry took control of midfield and the second came when captain Adam Confue drove forward and slid in Gavin Vella, who finished neatly.

0–2.

All looking rather comfortable.
Then, in the 94th minute, Sam Shortland’s long tired leg arrived just a fraction late and Tattenhoe were handed a penalty.

Pearce was finally beaten.

Luckily, there was barely enough time to restart.
FT: 1–2.

A proper away win, against a very good side.

Tomorrow evening our U18 squad travel to Rugby Town to open their league season. With 13 of the 16 in the squad at U16 level this is a massive step up and opportunity to develop against older more experienced players. We’re sure they would appreciate your support.
