After more than 20 years in education, one thing I know for sure is this:
Children rarely struggle because they lack potential.
More often, confidence has been knocked somewhere along the way, foundations have been rushed, or learning has become about chasing the “right answer” rather than building true understanding.
This sits at the heart of my educational philosophy.
During my time consulting with practitioners through the Prince’s Teaching Institute, we explored what genuinely helps children thrive academically—and one truth came up time and time again: Connection matters just as much as content.
Children learn best when they feel safe, seen, encouraged, and confident enough to engage with challenge. As a parent, I’ve always led with exactly the same belief.
Yes, academic excellence matters deeply - but how we help children get there matters just as much.
That’s especially true for the 11+ journey. The Essex Consortium exams are not simply about knowledge recall. They require deep thinking, reasoning, resilience, and confidence under pressure—and that kind of readiness is built over time, not overnight.
