Jury Week at PERFORMANCE DAYS.
This season we welcome a few guests to the table: Yasemin Malcolm (Uvex), Tom White (Under Armour), Eva Gruber (JET SET), Birgit Gahlen (The Woolmark Company), Johannes Fürst (Natural Laboratory), Dominik Fuss (Natural Laboratory) and Jenni Toft (Nura). Together with our team they go through every submission, compare perspectives and decide which fabrics maket it to the forums or take the awards.

Two days of hands-on work with the materials, then the results go on the tables.

Material spotlight: Grown, not manufactured.   The next wave of performance textile materials isn’t being manufactured in the traditional sense, it’s being biofabricated.   Mycelium-based leather alternatives develop from fungal networks in a matter of weeks before being processed into durable material. Orange peel byproducts are being transformed into cellulose-based fibers with a silk-like feel. Algae-derived fibers are further out, still working through the challenges of scaling for commercial production.   This isn’t a sustainability tagline, it’s material science exploring new feedstocks and new production processes, each at a different stage of maturity.   Swipe through for a primer on what these materials are, how they’re made, and where each one still needs to prove itself before it’s ready for large-scale sourcing.   Save this for your next sourcing conversation. Natural fibers aren’t the “traditional” choice at a functional fabric fair but they’re one of the smartest.
Wool regulates temperature and resists odor without a single chemical finish. Cotton and linen breathe in ways synthetics still try to engineer their way toward. And at end of life, they biodegrade instead of shedding microplastics for decades.
Performance doesn’t always mean lab-made. Sometimes it means paying attention to what’s been working for centuries.
