Northwords NWT NorthWords NWT supports northern writers throughout the NWT with programming and an annual festival

Established in 2007, NorthWords NWT is a non-profit society committed to supporting northern writers throughout the territory. It is proud to foster the careers of both emerging and established NWT writers by offering throughout the year workshops, mentorships, performances, and hosting events where they can share the stage with established Canadian authors. The highlight of our programming is our annual NorthWords Festival, held the first weekend of June in Yellowknife. The festival helps both emerging and established northern writers develop their craft by giving them the opportunity to attend and/or take part in public readings, mentorships, panel discussions, workshops, a writing contest, as well informal meetings with each other and guest authors. We have also encouraged the development of young Northern and Aboriginal writers by sponsoring events for schools.

When you ask a Northerner if they've finished their Christmas shopping as December rolls around, it's not unusual to hear the reply "I'm just waiting for a few more things to come in." Online shopping helps us access items we can't find in our small community. If you'd like to give a signed copy of Dispatches from Canada's North as a gift, I'm happy to gift-wrap it and send it to someone on your Christmas/birthday list. Someone had me send out 10 copies of the book to different friends across Canada last year. She said it was the easiest shopping she's ever done!

Interested in distributing your book with Northern Quill Publishing?

We’ve received overwhelming interest from authors looking to work with NQP for book distribution, so we’ve made the process a little easier!

We’ve created a new distribution application where authors and small presses can learn more about working with us and submit their book for consideration.

NQP selectively distributes books with a strong connection to the Northwest Territories and Canada’s North. We help connect the books we carry with readers through our online store, bookstore and retail relationships, wholesale orders, markets, festivals, and other sales opportunities.

If you think your book could be a good fit for our catalogue, visit our website to learn more and apply:

This week's double feature is all online!

First on October 22nd from 12:00 - 1:00 PM, we have a panel from Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des arts du Canada that will discuss their funding programs and how to navigate the portal.

Then, on October 24th from 10:00 - 11:30 AM, there will be an online horror writing workshop featuring the amazing Richard Van Camp and co-hosted by Northern Quill Publishing! It's a great way to make sure your horror anthology submission is ready for consideration.

Both events are free to attend. You can find more information about how to register on our Events page.

Online workshop announcement!

Join award-winning author and editor Richard Van Camp for a 90-minute horror writing workshop exploring what makes a story truly unsettling. Participants will dig into different horror genres, character development, building tension, and of course, raising the stakes.

You’ll also meet members of the selection committee for Northern Quill Publishing’s upcoming Northern horror anthology and learn more about what they’re looking for, the submission process, and how to submit your own horror story for consideration.

Whether you already have a story underway or are looking for the spark that will get you writing, this workshop will offer practical advice, creative inspiration, and insight into taking a horror story from idea to submission.

NorthWords NWT Is Looking for New Board Members

Do you believe in the power of stories? Are you passionate about supporting writers, readers, and literary arts in the Northwest Territories?

NorthWords NWT is seeking enthusiastic community members to join our volunteer Board of Directors at our Annual General Meeting on 17 October 2026 (meeting time and location to be announced).

As a board member, you'll help guide the organization's governance and strategic direction while supporting initiatives such as the annual NorthWords NWT Writers Festival, community programming, and opportunities that celebrate Northern voices. The board typically meets once a month on a Thursday evening, with additional involvement around events as members are available.

We welcome people with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Whether you're a reader, writer, educator, bookseller, librarian, arts supporter, or simply someone who believes literature helps build stronger communities, we'd love to hear from you.

We are especially looking for someone interested in serving as Treasurer. If you have experience with bookkeeping, accounting, finance, or non-profit financial oversight, we'd be grateful to speak with you. That said, financial experience is not required to join the board, Directors with other skills and perspectives are equally welcome.

NorthWords is committed to representing communities across the Northwest Territories, and we encourage applications from residents throughout the territory. Virtual participation is available for board members outside Yellowknife.

If you're interested in standing for election or would like to learn more about what serving on the board involves, please reach out to us at [email protected].

Help us continue to celebrate Northern stories, support Northern writers, and build a vibrant literary community across the Northwest Territories.

It takes a community to make festival happen!

Today, would like to give a big thank you to the many friends, community members, and supporters who donated up to $499 to help make the 2026 Writers Festival possible.

Festivals like this are built not only through large sponsorships, but through the collective generosity of people who believe in stories, literacy, creativity, and community. Every donation — of all sizes — helped create spaces for readers, writers, artists, and storytellers to gather, connect, and celebrate northern voices.

Your support helped bring events to life, support programming, welcome authors, and create meaningful experiences for our community.

Thank you for believing in the importance of storytelling in the North.

We are so grateful to have a community that continues to show up for the arts, for books, and for each other.
