🎬 What a special way to kick off APSA 2026!

Last night, we celebrated Australian screen legend Jack Thompson AM with a very special Opening Night screening of Burke & Wills (1985) presented by NFSA - National Film and Sound Archive of Australia at Event Cinemas Pacific Fair.

We were delighted to welcome City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate, along with special guests from Screen Queensland and Screen Australia, to join us for the celebrations.

A special thank you to Sean Sennett from The Hollywood Reporter for sitting down with Jack for a Q&A, and to Shonee Samia for being our wonderful MC for the evening!

The film's director, Graeme Clifford, was also in attendance, sharing some wonderful memories and stories of working with Jack.

A huge thank you to the NFSA - National Film and Sound Archive of Australia for their incredible work restoring this iconic piece of Australian cinema and helping bring it back to the big screen.

From Sunday Too Far Away and The Man from Snowy River to Breaker Morant, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith and Burke & Wills, Jack Thompson AM has been at the heart of Australian cinema for more than five decades.

One of Australia's most celebrated actors, Jack helped define a generation of Australian filmmaking, earning international recognition along the way, including Best Supporting Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in Breaker Morant.
Next week, we're honoured to celebrate Jack, President of the Asia Pacific Screen Academy, with a very special APSA 2026 Opening Night.

The evening will feature a screening of Burke & Wills (1985), presented by the NFSA - National Film and Sound Archive of Australia and personally selected by Jack himself. In this Australian epic, Jack stars as explorer Robert O'Hara Burke alongside Nigel Havers as William John Wills, bringing to life one of the most ambitious expeditions in Australian history.

⭐ APSA FORUM SESSION SPOTLIGHT | DAY 1: FIND YOUR PATHWAY ⭐

Have a screen project you're looking to take to the next stage? This is one Forum session you'll want to be part of!

As part of the Asia Pacific Screen Forum, Motion Picture Association - Asia Pacific Presents: Find Your Pathway will connect delegates directly with representatives from some of Australia's key screen industry organisations through a series of lunchtime roundtable discussions.

Joining us will be:

🎬 Rakel Tansley – Screen Australia
🎬 Julie Eckersley – Screen Queensland
🎬 Gina Black – Gold Coast Film Commission
🎬 Kathryn Metcalfe – Gold Coast Film Commission

The session will be moderated by Ruari Elkington, guiding discussions and helping delegates make the most of this opportunity to connect with industry representatives.

To help make these conversations as valuable as possible, participating delegates will be asked to submit a one-page project brief ahead of the session. These will be shared with the relevant industry representatives in advance, allowing discussions to focus on your project, its needs and potential next steps.

Whether you're exploring funding pathways, industry partnerships or ways to progress your project, this is an opportunity to get your work in front of people who understand the Australian screen industry.
