From 27 May to 3 June is National Reconciliation Week 2026. The theme for this year's National Recognition Week, developed in consultation with First Nations owned and operated consultancy Carbon Creative and supported by artwork from Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung artist Otis Hope Carey, is ALL IN. It's an invitation and a challenge for us all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

There are many barriers to reconciliation. In 2026, First Nations peoples continue to face systemic discrimination, violence, and dispossession. At Vulcana, we acknowledge the work that needs to be done to address Australia's violent history and to create an equitable future. We understand reconciliation requires our daily commitment to action - and we are ALL IN on doing our part, always striving both to work and to listen.

If you're keen to support reconciliation with us but aren't sure where to start, we recommend simply connecting with some of the amazing First Nations creatives we have across Magandjin and beyond. Tonight, for example, is the last night of EAT SLAY ZOMBIE's debut season at La Boîte Theatre - an amazing new theatre work led by Githabul–Migunberri–Yugumbeh woman Alinta McGrady and supported by our recent Fresh First Nations mentor Lisa Fa'alafi.

It's a great way to commit to going ALL IN on reconciliation. (There's still tickets available, I checked!) Will you accept the challenge and invitation of National Reconciliation Week? - MJ

The Tipping Point Cabaret 2026: A Line In The Air captivated audiences with a breathtaking performance that transformed simple soap bubbles into fleeting works of art. Combining circus, physical theatre and visual poetry, her act balanced precision and playfulness with an incredible sense of wonder.

Originally from France and now based in Meanjin (Brisbane), A Line In The Air brought her international training and multidisciplinary artistry to the stage, inviting audiences into a dreamlike world where delicate bubble sculptures floated, shimmered and disappeared before our eyes.

There was something beautifully human in the temporary nature of the work — a reminder to slow down, be present and enjoy the magic while it lasts.

A mesmerising act for audiences of all ages and a true highlight of the cabaret.

Tipping Point 2026: Blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination, Alastair’s act transported audiences into a surreal world of endurance, vulnerability and transformation. Alastair experiments with the unusual, abnormal and surreal, stirring audiences while pushing the boundaries of circus.

Artists like Alastair are what make live cabaret and contemporary circus so unforgettable. Bold, immersive and deeply human.

Chimera Arts was co-founded by one of Vulcana's trainers Lauren Watson and features three more of our trainers in its ensemble (Rosie Albina, Alastair Lette, Chaos Fae). And, they make amazing work. They have a chance to perform their amazing work on the global stage. Your help can get them there. Donate to their fundraiser at the link below - MJ

I'm really excited about the Circus Essentials short course that our team has put together. It can be so intimidating to start to learn circus as an adult and it can be so hard to know where to start. But, this beginner-friendly, four-week course for women, trans, and non-binary adults covers so much cool stuff and is a guaranteed safe, inclusive space to try new things. If you've ever wanted to dip a toe into circus but was looking for a decent paddle pool to begin with, this is perfect for you. Book now at our website :) - MJ

There’ll be free circus workshops running all day, a performance from the Vulcana Youth Troupe, a whips performance from our trainee trainer and admin legend Makenzy, and I’ll be doing a music set in the afternoon. Vulcana is 1 of roughly 20 Community Arts + Cultural Development (CACD) companies receiving four-year organisational funding from Creative Australia.

Within Creative Australia, Community Arts + Cultural Development currently receives only 5-6% of the total national arts investment.

Right now, the Australian Government is “developing a new National Cultural Policy to shape the future direction of the creative and cultural sector” and calling for feedback.

Together, Vulcana and our CACD friends around the country are calling for greater support for Community Arts + Cultural Development in the new Policy.

We're calling for:

1. Formal Recognition of Community Arts + Cultural Development (CACD)
2. A National CACD Entity within Creative Australia
3. Increased Investment in place-based arts and culture with, by, and for communities
4. Practice Sustainability for CACD practitioners
5. Reform to Funding Models to shift toward long-term funding
6. CACD to Become a Cross-Government Delivery Mechanism across health, climate, education, and other services
7. Deeper Research & Evaluation to further understand, capture, and promote CACD’s impact
8. Equitable Access to CACD across the continent

Visit revivecommunityarts.com for further information, a submission template, links to resources, and more.

Submissions to close 11:59pm, 24 May 2026
