Greetings!
It gives us great pleasure to inform you that Zambia was awarded the mandate to host Combined
U18/20 African Athletics Championships from the 29th April – May 3, 2023 at the Heroes Stadium.
We are proud to further announce that a combined total of 1,500 athletes and officials will be
expected for these Championships.
The event has the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers, and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
underpinning the Games was signed between the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) and
the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) on December 28, 2022. To superintend over the planning
and eventual hosting of the Championships, a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has been appointed
and is chaired by Mr. Elias Mpondela. The Ministry of Sports, under the directorate of Sports and Youth
Development, is the Vice Chairman.
We are further pleased to advise that His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr.
Hakainde Hichilema, is expected to grace the Opening Ceremony of the Championships, on April
28, 2023.
The Championships will be preceded by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Council and
Elective Meetings from April 25th – April 27, 2023 at the Kenneth Kaunda International Conference
Centre attracting 54 African countries including Zambia and over 150 delegates.
In Partnership with the CAA, the Government of the Republic of Zambia will spend in excess of K114
million for the event. Expenditure includes revamping of both the Heroes and OYDC infrastructure,
purchasing of the requisite field and Electronic Timing Equipment, lodging of over 1300 Athletes &
Officials and other allied requisite and operational costs.
