RAFAEL SHARON CROWNED ZAMBIA’S JUNIOR SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR

By Stafrance Zulu

Rafael Sharon, a Zambian Under 18 chess player, has enjoyed a stellar 2025, clinching both continental and national honours in a single year while carving his name into the country’s sporting history.

The African Youth Chess Champion was named Junior Sportsman of the Year at the 2025 Zambia Annual Sports Awards, capping off a breakthrough season that has elevated his status on the African stage.

Sharon’s success at the African Youth Chess Championship marked a defining moment for Zambia.

His gold medal victory in the U18 category ended a drought of more than 15 years, restoring the nation’s place at the top of the continental podium and signalling a resurgence of chess in the country.

The Zambia Annual Sports Awards, held in Livingstone at the Radisson Blu Mosi-Oa-Tunya Resort, brought together the nation’s top athletes, officials, and stakeholders to celebrate excellence across multiple sporting disciplines.

The ceremony recognised not only outstanding individual performances but also the contributions of coaches, federations, and sponsors who continue to drive the growth of sport in Zambia.

“Rafael Sharon a Zambian U18 Chess player has had a successful year in 2025 clinching continental and national awards in a single year while making history for himself and the country,” said Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu.

Mr Nkandu also commended all athletes honoured at the ceremony for their dedication and resilience, noting that the awards serve as an important platform to inspire young people to pursue sport as a pathway to personal development and national pride.

Sharon’s achievements have already begun to inspire a new wave of interest in chess among young Zambians, with many viewing his journey as proof of what can be accomplished through discipline and determination.

With his sights now set on attaining the prestigious Grandmaster title by 2027, the young champion continues to carry the hopes of a nation eager to see him reach even greater heights.

The Zambia Annual Sports Awards remain the country’s premier platform for recognising sporting excellence, celebrating achievement, and motivating the next generation of athletes to dream bigger and strive for success.
