The Brent January Group is an acoustic-electric quartet based in Stellenbosch. After the roaring success of their sold-out concert at the Johnman Concert Series in September 2025, the group has been preparing for upcoming performances across Cape Town in 2026. The ensemble performs a variety of original music, European jazz, and South African repertoire. This unique blend of styles, together with the sound of an acoustic-electric nylon-string guitar at the forefront, gives the group its powerful yet intimate sound. This concert, titled “Brent January Group Reimagined”, offers a fresh take on the group’s music and features their newest member, Henco Bester, on saxophones.

The music we present is simple yet elegant, making it accessible and inviting for audience participation. We believe that engaging with the audience creates a richer musical experience and allows listeners to feel part of the performance. Expect intimate soundscapes, intricate harmonies, and lively grooves that may even have you dancing. The programme proudly champions South African composers while also showcasing lesser-known European works.

The group consists of CalebDlamini (drums), Melisizwe Plaatjie (piano), Brent January (guitars), Pizzo Magatyana (bass), and Henco Bester (saxophones).

YOUTH represents a generation driven by curiosity, creativity, and connection. The name reflects a spirit of Yearning for Oneness, Understanding Through Heritage, but more broadly it speaks to young artists finding their voices, shaping new sounds, and building community through music. As a group, we aim to create performances that are honest, expressive, and forward-looking—music that resonates with where we come from, and where we are going.

The Nebula Trio consists of the unusual but arresting combination of flute/alto flute, viola and clarinet/bass clarinet. All 3 musicians are permanent members of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and have a love for chamber music. The programme will include new music by South African composers Matthijs van Dijk and Erin Potgieter as well as the celebrated American choral composer Randall Thompson. His lyrical vocal style is on perfect display in his suite where he uses the colourful combination to full effect. Nebula Trio will also perform a work for viola and clarinet by the trailblazing impressionist violist and composer Rebecca Clark.

An Intimate Devotion is an evening of music that traces the many shapes of human connection — from the quiet beginnings of love to its most passionate declarations, from the comfort of friendship to the complexities of loss and longing.

Through a curated blend of opera, musical theatre, and song, this programme invites the audience into a deeply personal space where vulnerability and expression meet. Each piece becomes a moment of reflection — on the people who shape us, the emotions that move us, and the experiences that define our lives.

At its core, An Intimate Devotion is not only about romance, but about the enduring ties that bind us to one another — a celebration of love in all its forms, and the quiet, powerful ways it lives within us.

Seasons of Life - with Janel Speelman (soprano), Annamarie Bam (clarinet) and Albie van Schalkwyk (piano) - represents the physical and emotional ranges of the performance programme, but also highlights the interesting range of styles when bringing these instruments together.

Between the main works for soprano, clarinet, and piano - such as Spohr Deutsche Lieder, Schubert’s Der Hirt auf fem Felsen, and the rarely heard Songs of Innocence by Arnold Cooke - this performance will also include shorter pieces for just voice and piano by Maurice Ravel and Amy Beach, as well as two jazz-inspired Pocket Sonatas for clarinet and piano by Alec Templeton.
