Built in Kendwa, with Kendwa: from its architecture, to its ownership model and community initiatives, Liyongo is shaped by its context.

Liyongo makes it a point to bring local perspective into the project. The villas are built from local, sustainable materials, and construction is carried out by Mazrui Building Contractors, who have been working in Zanzibar since 1953. The ownership and investment model has been crafted and adapted to the market by advisors who have worked in the area for years, resulting in individual titling under Zanzibar's Condominium Act for clear ownership, alongside a managed rental pool.

But it isn't only about the people inside the project. Liyongo has built a partnership with Kendwa's village leadership to work together on community initiatives. Together, they are currently working towards providing clean water, education, and employment opportunities to locals. Not as one time solutions, but as a long term programme that is part of the development's foundations and remains in constant dialogue with the community's needs.

Join Liyongo founder Christopher Nash on 17 September for the “Eco-tourism and Community-Focused Hospitality” panel and hear more about Liyongo’s approach.

Liyongo was founded on a specific premise: a resort development that grows alongside its community, not next to it.

That has meant building community priorities into the project's core structure: clean water infrastructure, education support for local schools, employment and skills training for Zanzibari residents, and market access for local artisans and suppliers. Not as add-ons, but as part of how the development actually operates.

Hear more from Christopher Nash, Liyongo's founder, on the panel "Eco-tourism and Community-Focused Hospitality,"

What makes a community-anchored hospitality project credible, not just appealing?

At the API Summit's panel Eco-Tourism and Community-Focused Hospitality, founder Christopher Nash will unpack the foundations behind Liyongo, a 60-villa resort development in Kendwa, Zanzibar built around three structural commitments:
• Individual land titling under Zanzibar property law, giving each villa its own registered
ownership rather than a shared or fractional claim
• A managed rental pool structure with professional oversight, so owners and operators
share in the same outcome instead of competing against each other
• A partnership with Kendwa’s community leaders to improve access to clean water, education, and employment opportunities, built into the resort's foundation, not delivered as one-time outreach

This is a session for anyone evaluating what durable, community-anchored hospitality assets look like on the continent.

Sustainable hospitality investment on Africa's Indian Ocean coast is drawing serious institutional attention.

At the 17th Annual API Summit in Cape Town, Christopher Nash, founder of Liyongo, a 60 villa resort development in Kendwa, Zanzibar, joins the panel on Eco-Tourism and Community-Focused Hospitality.

Liyongo is structured around individual land titling under Zanzibar property law and a managed rental pool overseen by the resort's own operations team, a model built for long-term asset governance rather than short-term lifestyle.

Join the conversation on 17 September, 14:55pm.
