DAY 3 at AMLD Africa 2026 🌍✨
Day 3 at the University of the Witwatersrand brought together researchers, experts and members of the African AI community for important conversations around AI ethics, governance and responsible innovation.
A highlight of the day was the panel “AI Ethics Beyond the Global North: African Priorities and Perspectives,” with Samuel Segun, Edmund Ugar, Paige Benton and Martin Bekker, exploring how African perspectives, values and priorities can help shape the development of responsible AI. The programme also featured discussions on data sovereignty, value alignment and the cultural and societal implications of emerging technologies.
Conversations continued around AI governance, from accountability and regulation to responsible digital citizenship and policy frameworks adapted to African contexts. The panel “Interoperability, Not Uniformity: Making Africa’s AI Policies Work Together,” brought together Bienvenu Agbokponto Soglo, Barbara Glover, Christelle Onana and Joseph JTR Mugauri to explore the future of AI policy and cooperation across the continent.

Another inspiring day at the University of the Witwatersrand, bringing together researchers, industry leaders and the African AI community around innovation, entrepreneurship and the future of AI across the continent. A highlight of the day was Kabelo Makwane, Country Director at Google South Africa, with his keynote “AI at Google: Dive into Gemini and AI Culture at Google.” The programme also featured an AI panel with Benjamin Rosman, Vukosi Marivate, Jonathan Shock and Jacques Ludik, exploring perspectives on Africa’s evolving AI landscape.
Throughout the day, conversations continued around AI for entrepreneurship, African languages, low-resource technologies and cultural preservation, showcasing the diversity of research and innovation shaping Africa’s AI ecosystem.
