In order to be born, you needed:

2 parents
4 grandparents
8 great-grandparents
16 second great-grandparents
32 third great-grandparents
64 fourth great-grandparents
128 fifth great-grandparents
256 sixth great-grandparents
512 seventh great-grandparents
1,024 eighth great-grandparents
2,048 ninth great-grandparents

For you to be born today from 12 previous generations, you needed a total of 4.094 ancestors over the last 400 years

Pause for a second and really think about this…

How many hardships did they survive?
How many silent battles did they fight?
How many tears did they wipe away?
How many moments of joy did they celebrate?
How many love stories began so that yours could one day exist?
How many dreams for a better future were whispered into the dark?
All of it…
just so you could be here, alive, in this moment

We are building a digital home for African heritage in the future.

✨ A place where:
• Surnames connect to clans and praise lines
• Languages like isiZulu, Sesotho and others live online
• Families can share histories for generations to come
• Young people can discover where they come from
• Elders’ knowledge is preserved, not lost

This is more than a platform.
It is a living archive powered by community.

As we grow, we are improving:
🔎 Smarter search across languages and surnames
🧭 Easier browsing by clan groups and alphabet
💬 Comment sections for shared knowledge
🧹 Ongoing data cleansing for accuracy
🤝 Collaboration with cultural custodians and families

Because the future of African knowledge should be accessible, accurate, and owned by its people.

Do you know the history behind that custom?

Share respectfully in the comments or contribute directly on the surname pages.

Your knowledge could help future generations understand who they are.
