Professional registration is an important career milestone for scientists. It shows that you’re a professional and have the technical competence which is valued by industry. Professional registration identifies you as a highly skilled professional with technical knowledge and competence. Once you have gained professional registration you may use letters after your name to identify yourself, e.g.

🚨REMINDER🚨: Invitation for Public Comment on the Draft Natural Scientific Professions Bill, 2026

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, is officially inviting all industry stakeholders, practitioners, and members of the public to provide input on the Draft Natural Scientific Professions Bill, 2026. This new legislative framework is designed to modernise the regulation of natural sciences in South Africa, ensuring the profession maintains the highest ethical standards while improving administrative efficiency.

The proposed Bill introduces several key changes to the sector, including the transition of SACNASP’s governance to a new Board structure and the introduction of compulsory continuing professional development. It also focuses on the future of the profession through the formal mentorship of candidate natural scientists.

We encourage all interested parties to review the draft and submit their written comments to the Department for consideration by May 31, 2026.

Today, the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation presents its 2026/27 Budget Vote, outlining a strategic vision for a transformed and responsive national system of innovation.
