An Evening of Waterford Estate 🍷
Some wines are simply enjoyed. Others invite you to slow down, explore their layers, and appreciate the story that unfolds in the glass.
This weekend at The Tank Room, we turn our attention to Waterford Estate, nestled in the Blaauwklippen Valley of Stellenbosch, where a remarkable combination of terroir, craftsmanship and an enduring pursuit of excellence has shaped the estate since its beginnings.
The Story Behind Waterford
Waterford Estate was established in 1998 when the Ord family, led by Jeremy and Leigh Ord, acquired the property with a vision to create something truly special in Stellenbosch. They brought in renowned winemaker Kevin Arnold, whose experience and ambition helped shape the identity of the new estate from the very beginning. The name Waterford itself was inspired by the waterfall flowing from the mountains above the property, while also subtly reflecting the Ord family name.
Kevin Arnold produced Waterford’s first wines in 1998, including the wine that would become a lasting part of the estate’s story, the Kevin Arnold Shiraz. The winery and tasting room followed soon after, officially opening in 2000. Cabernet Sauvignon became a cornerstone of the estate, while Waterford continued to explore Mediterranean varieties and refined red blends, always with a strong focus on expressing the character of its Stellenbosch vineyards.
Today, Waterford’s philosophy remains deeply connected to its surroundings. The ancient soils of Stellenbosch, the influence of the Helderberg and the cooling ocean breezes all contribute to wines with balance, texture and a distinctive sense of place. It is this combination of heritage, precision and individuality that makes Waterford such a compelling estate to explore.
