Freestyle Nationals 2014 This is the official page for the Freestyle Kayak Nationals 2014 hosted by R.E.A.L. Adventures by Whitewater Training.

Not even bad weather and no water kept the kayakers away from this year’s freestyle nationals. After a postponed start we eventually got started at 2pm in the shoot as the water hadn’t arrive yet , after prize giving ending at 4pm , the water then decided to come in fast and furious leaving everyone with some time to play. A huge thanks to everyone who made the effort for coming and for baring the cold with us . Also thanks to REAL Adventures for the organization and all the other sponsors Cafe mmmmmm ,Riverside Sun , The Dell, Savannah Africa , Parys Adventure Lodge and Rapid events

Morning

We have some juniors that will be attending this year’s nationals that are looking at going to worlds in 2015 or 2016 and I am extremely excited about that . I think the paddling community should give as much support as possible.

Freestyle kayaking in S.A needs a committee to run it and make decisions. I have been running freestyle in S.A from the start by default. I do think a democratic way of running it by interested and motivated people is best. we have had a committee in the past but everything has been left to me as a result of general disinterest .

We can either vote for a committee at nationals or if it is more urgent we can do it over email immediately. The format for nationals should be decided by a committee , we have had some suggestions after the release of the format but we have had no suggestions or input before the release of the format, entries ect.

I understand people’s desire to surf as much as possible on the day ,due to this We have implemented some changes we think will help make the competition go faster.

-We are starting earlier in the morning
-We are having prize giving on the rocks next to gatsien , so others can continue to surf
-we will have a microphone on both sizes
-If a participant is not there on time for their heat , then they forfeit that run ( we will be very strict on this )
-Scorers will not add up scores , only make it down and pass it onto another person to add up

The more volunteers we get to help with Scoring and added will help the day go a lot faster.
*Whitewater training has no income for this event only expenses

Scoring an open session as suggested is very difficult, if you haven’t finished scoring the last competitor and then there is a new one on the wave. Also you end up having to score a lot more runs for some people.
I strongly believe that the following the format of worlds is the best system for freestyle in S.A. This might mean that people don’t have their best rides but if forces people to try new moves and measure themselves which allows for improvement.

I think the way to deal with this forward is to elect a committee and the committee makes the decision.

I feel that I have done things in the best interest of the sport but I will be more than happy support a democratic committee and their decisions

Howzit People
There has been a bit of confusion lately with regards to access at Gatsien.
Sunwa River Lodge has said it is fine for us to get is there; however you NEED to call in advance.
They don’t want any of us arriving there without calling them first, which is understandable as they have clients to look out for and it is their property.
So if you want to get in at Gatsien call Sunwa beforehand not when you already there, other lodges don’t appreciate it if we all use different venues to get in, so from now on all Kayakers should stick to Sunwa. Remember to park there by the ski-slope and walk around the back.
You can call Francois on 082 211 0726 if you struggling to get hold of him call Sunwa Directly and ask to speak to Charl or Francois 056 817 7107.
Make sure all your friends know, we don’t want to mess up access for all of us because one oke didn’t call them first.
Have a great week; see everyone at Nationals on Sunday
Cheers Tammy

I Know its alot to read but Here are the details for Nationals 2013.
Where: Gatsien parking at SunWa River lodge by the ski-slope (Please don’t take over all the parking as they have other guests we have been allocated to the parking by the ski-slope)

Time: Registration opens at 09H00 until 09H30 at the latest (Please be on time so that we can start the competition on time) Registration will be up at the parking area.

Paperwork: Both spectators and Paddlers will be required to fill out an indemnity

I need to P*e! : We will put up signs to the bathrooms that have been allocated to the Event.

That side is cooler: As a spectator you might find yourself wanting to be closer to the action. We will have designated guides that will give you a life jacket and helmet and take you across the river

Will my Friends and Family be bored: Well they will get to watch awesome people doing awesome tricks on a wave and they can laugh at them too? Not only that but once the race is over they will get a chance to try out the Fluid sit in tops or run the rapid with REAL Adventures.

Nothing like a cold beer after a hot day: Well we have thought of that as well, SunWa has been awesome enough to allocate the Bush Bar for the event and prize giving. It will be open the whole day for soft drinks and water but Alcohol will only be sold once the finals are over.

What did I win and whose shoe will I drink out of: Prize giving will be held at the Bush bar at Sunwa River Lodge, we will announce what time prize giving will be on the day.
