The German Club started as a Gymnastics Club in 1926 as there was quite a substantial German community residing in the town and district. Petri Lutheran Church in Paarl (in Mill street) also played a huge role in the activities of the club. The club was disbanded in 1939 when the 2nd World War broke out. As many Germans arrived in South Africa from the war-torn Germany after the 2nd WW to seek a b
etter future, Pastor Winckler got the German community together again in 1953 and activities started as the German Society (Deutscher Verein). A German library was kept at the church and all the Fests, amongst others the Oktoberfest, were always held in the church hall. The dream was then to have an own clubhouse and early in the 1990’s this dream became reality when the German clubhouse was built in Klein-Parys, an ideal which the whole German community worked hard for. Ever since then all the activities of the club have been held here and many wonderful hours have been enjoyed with friends and families. The German Club is a non-profitable organisation and therefore much hard work from volunteers has gone into the club over the years to make it such a beautiful venue. We are always glad to welcome all German and other families to the club. The most important events are the SCHLACHTFEST in June, the OKTOBERFEST in October or September and at Christmas time we have a beautiful celebration, especially for the children. The club is open from Tuesday to Saturday. It has a beautiful cosy bar, designed and made by club members, as well as lovely home-made food which is served on those nights. There is a lovely outside grill terrace, large hall for functions, birthday parties, festivities or conferences and green lush gardens for kids to play on. Tourists are always welcome. Come and see our beautiful club and enjoy a drink together with some of our members!
