Akademia Acquires Paarl Property for Planned Residential University Campus

Private higher education institution Akademia has acquired a 105-hectare property in the Boschenmeer area of Paarl as part of plans to establish a permanent residential university campus in the Western Cape.

The site, known as Vérgesig, is expected to form the foundation of a future campus capable of accommodating approximately 3,000 students. The acquisition marks a significant milestone in Akademia's long-term expansion strategy and its commitment to Afrikaans-medium higher education.

Students have already commenced studies in Paarl this year from a temporary campus while planning and development processes for the larger facility continue. The institution says the new campus will support its growing student population and provide additional opportunities for teaching, research and student life in the region.

According to Akademia, the development is intended to strengthen mother-tongue education and expand access to Afrikaans higher education in the Western Cape. The institution views the project as an investment in academic excellence and the continued development of Afrikaans as a language of learning and scholarship.

The announcement has attracted attention within higher education circles, where discussions around language, access and inclusivity remain prominent. Supporters argue that mother-tongue education can contribute positively to student success and that South Africa's constitutional framework supports linguistic and cultural diversity. Others continue to advocate for broader multilingual approaches within the country's higher education sector.

Situated near the Wemmershoek Mountains, the property offers substantial space for future growth. The project remains in its planning phase, with regulatory approvals and development processes still to be completed before major construction can begin.

The proposed campus is expected to further position Paarl as an emerging centre for private higher education in the Western Cape.
