The 20th edition of the Momentum Medical Scheme Attakwas Extreme presented by Biogen takes place on Saturday, 17 January 2026. Known as the "Hell of the South," it is South Africa’s premier one-day mountain bike race and marks the official start of the 2026 racing season.
2026 Event Details
Date: 17 January 2026.
Location: The race starts at Chandelier Game Lodge near Oudtshoorn and finishes at Pine Creek Resort in Great Brak River.
Race Format: UCI Class 1 Cross-country Marathon (XCM).
Route Stats: Approximately 120 km with 2,650 m of climbing.
2026 Route Refresh: The 20th anniversary edition features a tweaked route to improve flow. It removes two rocky climbs and adds a new singletrack section entering the Attakwaskloof via Safranriver for the first time in 18 years.
Cut-off Time: Specifically for 2026, the cut-off time has been extended by one hour to 12 hours to celebrate the 20th anniversary.
Participants & Registration
Elite Field: Defending champions Alan Hatherly (double World Champion) and Samantha Sanders are among the top competitors returning for 2026. Other notable riders include European XCM Champion Andreas Seewald and SA Gravel Champion Hayley Preen.
Registration: Registration for all distances was held on Friday, 16 January 2026, at Klein Karoo Toyota in Oudtshoorn.
Distance Options:
Extreme: 120 km (Start: 06:30 at Chandelier Game Reserve).
Half: 47 km (Start: 10:30 at Pine Creek Resort).
Mini: 32 km (Start: 10:30 at Pine Creek Resort).

The 20th edition of the Momentum Medical Scheme Attakwas Extreme, presented by Biogen, takes place on Saturday, 17 January 2026. This Cross-Country Marathon (XCM) holds UCI Class 1 status and is known as South Africa’s toughest one-day mountain bike race.
Race Details
Distance & Elevation: The 2026 route has been refreshed, covering 120 km with 2,650 m of vertical climbing (4 km shorter and 250 m less elevation than 2025).
Start & Finish: The race begins at Chandelier Game Lodge near Oudtshoorn and finishes at Pine Creek Resort in Great Brak.
Time Limit: For the 20th anniversary, the cut-off time has been extended by one hour to a total of 12 hours.
Elite Field: Defending champion Alan Hatherly (double Cross-Country World Champion) headlines a field of 48 UCI elite men and 19 UCI elite women.
Route Updates for 2026
The course has been tweaked to produce a faster race while retaining its "Hell of the South" reputation:
Removed Sections: Two rocky climbs between Water Point 1 and Water Point 2 have been removed.
New Additions: A new purpose-built singletrack section has been added, following a return to the original approach into the Attakwaskloof.
Water Points: There are six water points; Water Point 2 (40 km) and Water Point 5 (94 km) serve as technical feeding points for professional riders.
Alternative Distances
For those not competing in the full extreme race, shorter options are available, both starting and finishing at Pine Creek Resort:
Attakwas Half: 47 km (R550 entry fee).
Attakwas Mini: 32 km (R230 entry fee).
Note: E-bikes are permitted in the Half and Mini distances only
