ART AT HEART MOMENT
INKULULEKO eMDANTSANE
This year marks 50 years since the historic June 16, 1976 Soweto Uprising, a defining moment in the struggle for freedom, dignity and the right to quality education for South Africa's youth.
Fifty years later, the responsibility of our generation is not only to remember the courage of 1976, but to build the future that those young people envisioned.
The Vula Festival was born from that conviction.
What began as a community initiative has now grown into its Second Annual Festival, bringing together sport, arts, culture, education and youth development under one vision: to open doors for young people.
The word Vula means "Open."
Open opportunities.
Open minds.
Open stages.
Open pathways.
Open futures.
Vula Festival recognises that talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not. Through music, poetry, visual arts, dance, sport, public speaking and cultural expression, the festival seeks to connect young people with mentorship, exposure and inspiration.
This year's programme unites learners, artists, athletes, educators, community leaders and families in a shared commitment to youth empowerment. It is a platform where young voices are heard, young talents are celebrated and young dreams are given room to grow.
As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of June 16, Vula Festival stands as more than an event. It is a movement. A declaration that the youth of today deserve platforms to learn, create, lead and excel.
From 2026 onwards, the vision is clear:
To establish Vula Festival as a premier Youth Day platform for talent development, artistic excellence, cultural preservation and community transformation in Mdantsane, Buffalo City and beyond.
The youth of 1976 fought for access.
The youth of today must be given access to opportunity.
Vula Festival exists to help open that door.
"The struggle opened the way. The youth must now walk through it."
