Amarider 100 Miler. The original.

Amarider 100 Miler. The original. Amarider 100 Miler & 50 Miler event since 2009. The original 100 Miler from Malmesbury. Only pre-entries will be accepted for both distances.

The tenth edition of The Amarider 100Miler will be presented by The Bike Hub and will take place in Malmesbury on the 19th of May 2018. This individual one-day mountain bike ultra-marathon of 160km is affordable and a very special event. From the humbling beginnings that grew in 2009 to what is now one of the must-do-events on the mountain biking calendar. The scenery is beautiful in the Swartland

during Autumn and the riding is not technical. The weather conditions play a major role in testing your endurance, as mud, wind or rain do on most outdoor events. This event will start early morning just as the sun is rising, with astounding scenery that is spellbound to keep the legs going for many hours. Entries are limited and remember that this is a seeding event for Stellenbosch MTB Challenge 2018. The 160km (100Miler) route is divided into three sections of approximately 55km with two compulsory timing checkpoints. The format of the race creates perfect vantage points for spectators and support. While the competition is based on solo riders completing the entire course these riders can form 4-man teams and enjoy a day out with mates on a saddle (of course)! The team results will be based on the 4th rider crossing the line thereby encouraging teamwork and camaraderie. The shorter route option of the 50Miler (80km), starts at the halfway mark at Riebeeck Kasteel and ends with the 100Miler riders at the Malmesbury Showgrounds. This event also provides an opportunity for keen riders to taste endurance riding along with twist and turns against the clock. DATE: Saturday, 19 May 2018
TIME: 07h30 (100Miler) & 09h00 (50Miler)
DISTANCE: 160km with an 80km shorter option
VENUE: Malmesbury

100 MILER INFO:
Four spectator points - go and support the riders! Total route elevation is 1950m

50 MILER INFO:
For the not so brave there are a 50 Miler (80km) which starts at Riebeeck Kasteel (Delico Butchery) and finishes in Malmesbury (please note entries are limited and only pre-entries are taken). There will be a shuttle from the finish to the start at Delico at 07h30 and there will be NO shuttle available in the afternoon. You have to book & pay for the shuttles and they were fully booked last year. So please try and arrange lifts with your friends or family. It is a 25km drive from the finish to the start. Timing:
You will need an Amarider Trail Tag to be timed for this event, you will tag in and out at various check points along the route. The Trail Tags are available for purchase at R100 or for rent at R50. You’ll use the Tag at most Dirtopia and Amarider events, so you might as well purchase one. If you don’t have a Trail Tag you MUST purchase a temporary Trail Tag at R50 OR a permanent Trail Tag at R100 upon entering. Fundraiser for the organisation. Amarider is a recreational trails advocacy group focused on improving trail opportunities on the African continent and proceeds of the event are channelled directly to trail projects. Amarider is focused on improving trail construction standards around the country and assist various mountain bike clubs to ensure that their trails are safe and environmentally sustainable. Finishing the Amarider 100 Miler within the allotted 10hours 30minutes cut-off time is one of the most challenging endurance tests!

Dirtopia - 20 years on

Dirtopia, now well into its 20 season of eventing and trail creation has lived through many changes in the cycling landscape and along the way has had to adapt to shifts in consumer behaviour, new opportunities and even natural disasters.

What started as an instigation of a young sport requiring event and trail opportunities, has morphed into an overtraded, commercialised eventing scene and trails on almost every property worth riding on.
We have coined the phrase 'participation fatigue' to describe the current downturn in adult mtb behavior. It is not that people are not riding, they are simply choosing how they ride differently. Riding from home is the norm and this is directly related to the increase in awesome suburban edge trail opportunities, something we were heavily involved in and very proud of. If you ride anywhere in the Western Cape, odds are you are riding somewhere where we built or consulted. In KZN we consulted on Giba Gorge, in Gauteng many meetings were held regarding the Braamfontein Spruit and other sites.

Over the years our events have transformed from a mountain bike heavy calendar to one where 70% of our event activations are trail running focused. Who'd have thunk?!

That said, we are still mountain bikers at heart, and this is of course best portrayed by our involvement in the Spur Schools League, South Africa's largest cycling program. This is of course driven through our non-profit off-shoot Amarider.
Amarider was formed in 2006 when we realised that we were focused and passionate mostly about the development of the sport, and in hindsight a pretty progressive move back then. This stuff was non-profit territory.
Slowly, as Amarider set the ground-rules for trail advocacy, the League grew from a 900 participant, 21 race program to a 60+ race behemoth attracting over 19000 entries in 2019. The demands on our time has had to shift and when Spur announced a further 10 year commitment early last year, it was clear where our focus had to be.

With the League we can again foster that passion for riding we nurtured 20 years ago, but this time amongst young riders. On almost exactly the 20th anniversary of the original Dirtopia Festival, it was fitting that we ran the inaugural following an almost identical model to that first Festival, but this time focussing on the youth.
To see the participants embrace the program and have a mountain biking blast, was truly enthusing to us as veteran promoters. It felt as if the ethos of Dirtopia had come full circle.

On the home front, Dirtopia continues to manage a calendar of events but after almost 3 years in the hospitality game, we have decided to let go of the restaurant and lodge to focus on our knitting, and make more time for our family.
We have relooked our calendar to accommodate the increasing Spur League and will cut trail runs by 50% to 11 offerings and 2020 will see the return of the 24 Hours of Oak Valley. The 24 hour will take place once every 24 months and alternate with the 100 Miler, which is taking a break next year.
The Enduro scene is flourishing under EWC so we will run pop-up events now and then when the calendar allows.
The Stellenbosch MTB Challenge continues.

The toughest decision has been around the Delvera Trail Centre.
It has always been a passion project for us, but the time has come to alter how it operates.
We will continue to run an office from our original trail centre site (pottery) but will not offer a 7-day a week permit and bike rental service. We will make a call regarding weekend permit sales shortly.

We are super excited about our pop-up Trail Centre on Muratie Wine Estate. The location is simply stunning with over 20km of singletrack starting within 50m of the trailhead. The plan is to open and service the trails during the higher demand times of mornings and weekends with bike rentals and trail related merchandise.
We would like to thank all our supporters for the continued support of our activities and invite all our mtb friends to join us on one of our trail rides.

A beautiful morning broke in Malmesbury with blue skies and no wind, but by lunch time the 160km riders struggled again a head wind towards the finish. The 50Miler started at 9am in Riebeeck-Kasteel where it was cloudy and misty from the start, which turned into light rain a few hours later.
