He adds that the City is home to many top athletes, and it is phenomenal to bring events of this caliber to their backyard.
Two months from now, in August, the City will host the 10 km Spar Ladies race at Marks Park Sports Club and expects to attract around 6000 athletes. The following month, in September, athletes can gear up for the ABSA race at Mary Fitzgerald Square, which is expected to attract 10 000 athletes. Later this year, in November, it's time for the iconic Soweto Marathon, which attracts thousands of local and international athletes annually.
Next year’s calendar promises more excitement. In April 2024, the City will host a Grand Prix Gold Label track event in Ruimsig. Athletes from over 200 countries will compete for the R 4 million prize fund. The event is an Olympic qualifying event.
In July 2024, Athletics South Africa will be focusing on children by introducing a kiddies championship at the FNB Stadium.
In 2024, the aim will also be to revive the City to City marathon from Johannesburg to Centurion. The Executive Mayor of Joburg should write a message to the mayor of Tshwane, and the number one athlete will run with the message. It is a 50km race and expects to attract 15 000 athletes.
Moloi is excited about the impact the events will have on the City. "Events of this caliber will boost the City’s economy. Hotels will be full. While athletes are here, they also explore the attractions. Some even decide to return for travel."
Moloi adds, "We promote a healthy lifestyle and social cohesion. These races are inclusive of all." He encourages spectators to show their support at events and cheer athletes on along the way.
His plea to the City of Joburg is to revive the Joburg Stadium and create more track and field facilities for athletes.
As for himself, after suffering a knee injury that slowed him down, he finally made his return and is participating for fun. He is continually waving the City’s flag high.
