Spring Soul Sessions lit up Bolo’s Place

This past weekend, BGKP Unplugged brought the community together for two full days of pure joy at Bolo’s Place on 45 Beacon Road in Kliptown. From 10 a.m. until late on both Saturday and Sunday, 12–13 September, the Spring Soul Sessions delivered exactly what the flyer promised: fun, food, music, and real connection.

The turnout was incredible. People came out in numbers far beyond what anyone expected. The yard filled up early and stayed buzzing right through the night. Friends, families, neighbours and new faces mixed easily under the lights, against the colourful graffiti walls, around the white picket fence, and under the umbrellas. The energy never dipped. Laughter carried across the space, conversations flowed, and the vibe stayed warm and welcoming from morning into the late hours.

Food was available and sold well, cold drinks and beverages kept everyone refreshed, and the music set the perfect soundtrack for the whole weekend. People posed for photos, shared sh**ha, chilled on benches and chairs, and simply enjoyed being together. Whether it was groups laughing around wooden tables, friends posing in front of the vibrant murals, or people just soaking in the atmosphere, the common thread was clear: everyone was having a really good time.

The photos, taken by Bonginkosi Mavuso, were absolutely stunning. He captured the spirit of the weekend perfectly — the big smiles, the easy connections, the golden light of the day and the glowing energy of the night. His images bring the whole event back to life and do justice to the beautiful people and the lively atmosphere at Bolo’s Place.

A huge thank you to every single person who showed up and supported the Spring Soul Sessions. Your presence made the weekend what it was. The love and support meant everything, and it was felt in every corner of Bolo’s Place.

Keep an eye out for the next one. BGKP Unplugged will be back, and when they are, you already know it’s going to be special. Same energy, same heart, same Kliptown warmth. Don’t miss it.

A living canvas of friendship, heritage and street art in the heart of Kliptown.

My friends turned up with spray cans, stencils, energy and vision, and transformed the wall at my art studio on Beacon Road in Kliptown into something truly special. What was once a plain surface is now a vibrant, layered mural that celebrates both the creativity of the artists and the cultural giants whose faces now watch over the street.

At the centre of the work are striking portraits of David Bolo Blom (Oom Bolo), Bob Nameng, Credo Muthwa and Don Mattera. These four figures — photographer and chronicler of Kliptown life, beloved community activist and “soul rebel,” legendary traditional healer and storyteller, and the late poet-activist known as “The Don” — are rendered with care and presence. Their faces sit among bold wildstyle lettering, exploding colour fields of red, yellow, green, blue and orange, and the dynamic tags that give the wall its street energy.

Special recognition goes to a close friend Nkululeko Mahlangu (also known as Jola), whose distinctive stencil work brings a sharp, graphic power to several of the portraits. His black-and-white stencilled faces cut through the bright spray-paint layers with clarity and dignity, creating a striking contrast that makes the icons feel both timeless and immediate. Alongside him, the rest of the crew moved between large-scale freehand painting, detailed lettering and careful layering, working on stepladders, stools and the dusty ground as the mural slowly came alive.

The atmosphere on Beacon Road was collaborative and joyful. Artists crouched low to build colour, stood back to check proportions, and shared the space with curious children who watched the process unfold. Spray cans lined the ground, music and conversation filled the air, and the wall steadily filled with history and colour under the Kliptown sky.

The finished mural does more than decorate. It turns the studio wall into a public statement of pride — a meeting point of contemporary graffiti culture and the living memory of Kliptown’s own heroes. Thanks to Nkululeko’s precise stencils and the collective talent of your friends, the wall now stands as a beautiful, permanent tribute: a place where art, friendship and community history meet in one unforgettable piece of street art.

Important Update: Spring Soul Sessions Postponed

Hi everyone,
Due to the expected rainy and unsettled weather conditions this weekend (with a significant chance of precipitation forecast for Saturday), we have made the difficult decision to postpone Spring Soul Sessions.

We want everyone to enjoy the full experience — the music, food, connection, and beautiful atmosphere — without the rain dampening the vibe. Safety and comfort come first.

New dates:
Saturday & Sunday, 12 & 13 September 2026
Same time: 10AM till Late
Same venue: Bolo’s Place, 45 Beacon Road
Everything else remains the same — food will still be sold, beverages available, and all the Spring vibes, music, people, and ambiance you were looking forward to.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We can’t wait to see you under better skies next weekend.

See you on the 12th & 13th!
