What is This?

My Elements is a one act play about a young black girl named Bontle who lives in Soweto. Bontle
finds it challenging to fit into society because society questions her Identity, as to why she posses
features that make her come across as a Coloured looking girl yet she is black. We see Bontle’s story
unfold through the eyes of different characters.

My Elements started as a school project at The Market Theatre Laboratory, it is written by
Semakaleng Osopeng, directed by Paul Noko and funded by the National Arts Council of South
Africa. In 2011 My Elements was selected to be further developed as a residency project of the
Doen Writers Programme at the Market Theatre under the mentorship of Toni Morkel and Lindiwe
Matshikiza. November 2011 My Elements was performed at the Sibikwa Breaking New Ground Solo
Festival where it was well received by the audience. My Elements will now be gracing the main stage
of the Soweto Theatre on the 19 March 2013 with two performances for the day, one performance
starts at 10:30 am and the second performance is at 13:00pm.
