A week in the life of Charlie & Gerald's Town Treasure…

Last week was not for the faint hearted. It got a bit hectic behind the scenes. Gerald felt overwhelmed and went on strike for several days to calm down! Charlie kept focused and kept going. Then Gerald returned and some of the staff team took a few days off to recoup. Yet, in front of the scenes our guests experienced fantastic hospitality and food. Behind the scenes we all continued to work on systems, recipes, and our hosting skills. This week we are all back and readier than ever to provide the best restaurant experience in Jozi!

We enjoyed a constant flow of walk-in customers on Saturday and Sunday especially, enjoying our scrumptious, casual food menu. Charlie’s Beer Express (Ngudus served in jugs with taps) and Gerald’s Gins with Soda & Tonics were certain hits. So were our freshly baked bread, served to each customer on arrival with homemade chilli and basil sauces. We also hosted some lovely romantic couples celebrating anniversaries, enjoying exquisite One Table set menus.

Good news, it is month end this week and we are looking forward to hosting you at Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure. How about some cocktails and delicious prawn matapa, or glass of red wine with traditional bobotie?

The Thunder Walker closed on 30 June. We thank our patrons for all their loyal support.

Do not dispair though. JoburgPlaces, the team behind the Thunder Walker, will continue its inner-city tours and activations. We will continue to give new life to forgotten spaces in town.

Look out for our imminent launch of Charlie & Gerald's Town Treasure in the historic bank vault underneath the erstwhile Thunder Walker. Restaurant, bar and shop all in one, we are looking forward to welcoming you soon again!

We are bidding farewell to this beautiful space tomorrow (photo taken by a special guest today). On Monday we are beginning the move out of the extraordinary Thunder Walker arcade and banqueting hall.

But don't be too alarmed. Under that marble tile floor is the historic bank walk (till now known as the Zwipi Underground) which we will retain and change to Charlie & Gerald's TOWN TREASURE.

Introducing Charlie & Gerald’s TOWN TREASURE

The Thunder Walker is closing (its last meals being served on Sunday 27 June). However, its historic bank vault section (previously known as the Zwipi Underground) is morphing into Charlie & Gerald’s TOWN TREASURE, opening on 6 July 2021.

Charlie & Gerald’s TOWN TREASURE will be an astonishing space in a combination of bar, restaurant and shop. Casual walk-in drinks and food service available in the ground-floor section as well as the front of the underground section, while the private dining rooms and vault booths in the back are reserved for exclusive One Table lunch and dinner bookings.
