MARIONE FOURIE ACHIEVES SEASON'S BEST AT ROME DIAMOND LEAGUE

Sprint hurdler Marione Fourie was the best of the small South African contingent at the fourth leg of the Diamond League series in Rome, Italy on Thursday night.

SA ATHLETES GAIN MOMENTUM AT RABAT DIAMOND LEAGUE

South African athletes picked up some momentum in the early stages of the international track and field season, delivering solid performances at the third leg of the Diamond League series in Rabat, Morocco on Sunday.

Sprinter Sinesipho Dambile, a finalist at last year's World Athletics Championships, was the best of the five SA athletes who participated, taking third place in the men's 200m race in 20.03 seconds. Another speedster, Zakithi Nene, and hurdles specialist Marione Fourie, both ended fourth in their events. Nene completed the men's 400m contest in 44.41 and Fourie crossed the line in 12.62 in the women's 100m hurdles, finishing just 0.13 outside her own national record of 12.49.

In the men's 1 500m race, Tshepo Tsh*te was fifth in 3:31.53 - missing his own SA record of 3:31.35 by 0.18 - and fellow middle-distance runner Prudence Sekgodiso ended sixth in the women's 800m event in 1:57.41.

"This is the global stage where we want to see our athletes involved and performing at because its financially beneficial to do so," said the Deputy President and Acting President of Athletics South Africa, John Mathane. "We want to see them succeed. The Diamond League is also the best place to shake off those nerves at this early stage of the international calendar for South African athletes.

"It's congratulations to Dambile, his coaches and support staff for achieving a podium finish. We are encouraging all professional athletes to stay focused and work harder to trigger achievements."

The fourth of 15 legs in the 2026 Diamond League series will be held in Rome, Italy on Thursday.

ATHLETICS SOUTH AFRICA JOINS GLOBAL KIDS’ ATHLETICS DAY CELEBRATIONS

Athletics South Africa will this month join the global celebration of Kids’ Athletics Day as the international campaign marks five years of inspiring children worldwide to participate in athletics and active play.

The 2026 edition of Kids’ Athletics Day represents a major milestone for the initiative, which was launched in 2022 to promote physical activity, inclusion and community participation among children of all backgrounds and abilities. More than 1.2 million children have participated globally over the past four years, with organisers targeting over two million cumulative participants in 2026.

As part of this year’s celebrations, Athletics South Africa will host activities in partnership with its provincial structures of Limpopo Athletics (LIMA), Athletics North West North (ANWN) and Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA).

The South African celebrations will take place at the following venues:
Ngwenani Primary School in Thohoyandou on 25 May 2026 in partnership with LIMA, then at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg on 29 May 2026 in partnership with ANWN, before finally moving the celebrations to Germiston Athletics Stadium in Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg on 30 May 2026 in partnership with CGA.

The events will bring together children, educators, coaches and members of the athletics community in a vibrant celebration of youth participation in sport, while encouraging healthy lifestyles and active living. Kids’ Athletics Day continues to serve as an important platform for introducing children to athletics in a fun, educational and inclusive environment.

“Kids’ Athletics Day continues to play an important role in inspiring children to live active and healthy lives through sport. Athletics gives young people an opportunity to learn valuable life skills in a fun and inclusive environment, and we are proud to be part of this growing global movement.

“In future, we hope to see more joining the annual Kids’ Athletics Day celebrations held globally every May. We want to see even more schools, communities and ASA provinces joining these celebrations in future as we continue building the next generation of athletes,” said John Mathane, Deputy President and Acting President of Athletics South Africa.

ASA ACTING PRESIDENT CALLS FOR MORE ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY

The Deputy President and Acting President, John Mathane, delivered a State of Athletics on Friday afternoon, giving assurance that the national federation is on a vigorous turnaround.

Addressing multiple issues of concern raised by Council Members and various stakeholders, Mathane said Athletics South Africa (ASA) is in the process of sweeping and cleaning itself from the top down. He was speaking to the media during a press conference held in Rosebank on Friday, where he outlined the way forward.

"ASA acknowledges the concerns raised regarding governance challenges and operational instability, but let me be clear that there will be no tolerance for poor governance, administrative failure, financial misconduct or lack of accountability in ASA," Mathane said. "Our current leadership has taken decisive actions to strengthen the governance system, enforce compliance across all provinces, ensure council resolutions are implemented without any delay, and we have created stability of operational structures within South Africa. We are moving from disorder to discipline."

Among other issues, Mathane said ASA was engaging directly with Central Gauteng Athletics and Athletics Mpumalanga, to strengthen oversight processes and enforcing accountability mechanisms in order to find a way to protect elite athletes who are not being paid their prize money at sanctioned events, as had been the case in these provinces in recent years.

He also confirmed that restrictions were being placed on individuals organising non-sanctioned events, including mass participation running events without following correct channels and procedures across the country. All athletics events must be sanctioned and registered with the resident ASA province.

According to Mathane, ASA has now advertised the positions for a permanent chief executive officer (CEO) and an external bookkeeper. He also dislosed that the national federation's constitutional committee was already in the process of amending the ASA constitution, and that ASA was establishing an independent ethics committee.

According to Mathane, independent processes were also being put in place to address the suspension of ASA President James Moloi, which is an exercise which ASA hopes will be exhausted by the end of May 2026.

In addition, Mathane confirmed that ASA had signed a deal with public broadcaster the SABC to ensure more people have access to coverage of South African athletics events.

"We are engaging with World Athletics, SASCOC and DSAC (Department of Sport, Arts and Culture) and our focus is very clear with them. We want to stabilise the federation, restore credibility, enforce accountability and rebuild confidence among the stakeholders," Mathane said. "We want clean governance and transparency, which is non-negotiable because we cannot rebuild athletics through personal battles or public hostility. We will rebuild athletics with unity, discipline and leadership."

RECORD-BREAKING TEAM BAG TWO MEDALS FOR TEAM SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa secured two silver medals with record-breaking performances on Sunday at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.

Producing an incredible result in the men's 4x400m final, Mthi Mthimkulu, Lythe Pillay, Leendert Koekemoer and Zakithi Nene took second place in 2:55.07, breaking the SA record and climbing to third place in the all-time world rankings.

In the process Pillay, a former world junior 400m champion, crowned a great run by setting the quickest 400m relay split in history, covering his leg in 42.66.

Host nation Botswana won gold in 2:54.47, setting a new African record.

"We were ready to battle it out with the guys and we knew it was going to take something very special to win the race, but I'm super proud of the boys," Nene said afterwards. "The boys really stepped up and delivered what they needed to - what was expected of them and more - and I'm super proud of the national record we ran."

In the men's 4x100m final, Mvuyo Moss, Cheswill Johnson, Bradley Nkoana and Akani Simbine completed the one-lap contest in 37.49. They finished just 0.06 behind the United States squad who won gold in 37.43.

"I'm proud of the guys for showing up. I knew they were going to be able to do it... because these guys are doing what they need to do, and they're running crazy well, and they're in shape, so why not?" said Simbine, the national relay captain.

"I didn't want to put pressure on us but I expected an African record. Yes, we wanted to get the gold medal and defend our title, but we came out here, we ran well, we had an amazing time. We can't ask for anything more."
