In 1976, the youth stood up.
In 2026, we gather to remember, celebrate, and carry the spirit forward.

This year, Back to the City marks three powerful milestones:
50 years since the June 16 Youth Uprising
and 20 years of Back to the City Festival and 140 years of City of Johannesburg.

From the courage of the youth who changed history, to the generations who built South African hip-hop from the streets up this festival is a tribute to resilience, resistance, creativity, and culture.

Against oppression.
Against silence.
Against being counted out.
Against all odds.

Back to the City returns to Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown on 10 October 2026 for a historic 20-year celebration of SA hip-hop, youth culture, and the spirit of Johannesburg.

2 International artist. 100 artists. 30 DJs. 40 graffiti artists. MC battles. DJ battles. Skate park. Basketball. Game zones. Food. Fashion. Culture.
