ROAD TO DESOLATION isn’t just a gravel race - it’s a journey through one of South Africa’s most magnificent and remote landscapes.

From the sweeping plains, to the towering cliffs of the Valley of Desolation, every climb, descent, and turn immerses you in the Karoo’s timeless wilderness.

A race whose route should only be explored on two wheels.

“Organising the event turned out to be as challenging as the course itself. “It’s a completely different beast compared to my work as a cinematographer,” Julian admits. “I had no idea it would become a year-round commitment.” Yet, seeing riders from across South Africa and beyond gather in Graaff Reinet - a place few had ever associated with gravel riding - made all the effort worthwhile.

The inaugural race came with its share of hurdles. Unexpected rain tested riders and organisers alike, turning the Karoo’s typically dry terrain into a muddy battleground. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, the sense of camaraderie at the finish line and the shared stories at the post-race dinner were unforgettable highlights.

By 2024, the race had grown significantly. The field included riders from Europe and across Africa, with elite cyclists like Marco Joubert shattering previous course records with a time of just over 6h. “It was amazing to see so many top-level cyclists in a small town like Graaff Reinet,” Julian reflects. Though he acknowledges some missteps, such as overly strict cut-off times, he views each year as a step forward.
With Road to Desolation now firmly established, Julian feels a growing sense of accomplishment. What began as a personal challenge has evolved into a celebration of the Karoo’s unique beauty and the resilience of those who dare to ride through it. “Sharing this incredible region with others,” Julian says, “is what makes it all worthwhile.”

And as we move into the event’s third iteration, we’re cannot for the journey to race weekend.

The journey to create ROAD TO DESOLATION mirrored the region’s wild, unpredictable nature.

It all started with local Graaff-Reinet rider Devrin, whose mountain biking expertise revealed a network of incredible trails. Though designed for MTBs, these routes proved rideable on gravel bikes and now form the backbone of TASTE OF DESOLATION. For the race, however, Julian envisoned something more - a gravel challenge blending speed, technical variety, and the Karoo’s wild beauty.

Route planning started on Strava, but Julian’s early attempts were overly ambitious. “I failed to finish the course on all 3 tries,” he admits. Determined to avoid creating a boring out-and-back route, he found a little-used road flanked by game farms. “Only 15 riders had ever logged it on Strava,” and so, he connected it to the desert town of Nieu Bethesda, looping back to Graaff-Reinet with a dramatic finish climbing the Valley of Desolation.

Fine-tuning the course through trial and error, Julian learnt a lot about the Karoo’s seasons. “Autumn, winter, and early spring are the sweet spots,” he says. “Summer in the Karoo is brutal - the heat, dehydration, relentless winds, and storms here are no joke.”

This became clear during a mid-summer ride, when he and a friend were caught in a massive thunderstorm. “I even sent a voice note to my wife saying goodbye,” he recalls (luckily deleting it before they came back into reception). Another summer attempt with friends highlighted the Karoo’s devil thorns, leaving the group with 14 punctures and a gruelling 12-hour finish at sunset.

Eventually, the breakthrough came with a solo test ride, where Julian completed the course without any fault. It was proof the route was not only achievable but primed for a truly unique racing experience.

The Karoo defies easy definition, it’s vastness is as elusive as its boundaries. Likewise, ROAD TO DESOLATION, a race born from the spirit of this rugged region, mirrors its enigmatic character —challenging, unpredictable, and deeply tied to the land it traverses.

For Julian Robinet, ROAD TO DESOLATION’s founder, the allure of the Karoo struck him during his first visit in 2017. Growing up in Germany, Julian saw cycling as a practical means of commuting. After moving to Cape Town, his childhood love for the bike evolved into a means of exploring South Africa’s diverse landscapes.

When the pandemic gripped South Africa, Julian turned to the open horizons of the Eastern Cape. Gravel riding, after all, is about escaping boundaries, and the Karoo’s bushy, untamed expanses offered freedom like no other.

The connection deepened as Julian and Katy spent more and more in Graaf Reinet. Cycling in the area was unlike anything Julian had experienced before. Out here, plateaus stretch endlessly, offering uninterrupted views of the Camdeboo’s iconic terrain. The dramatic plunge into the Valley of Desolation, with its towering cliffs, evokes both awe and respect for the land’s raw power.

“When I checked the routes on Strava, barely anyone had ridden here,” Julian recalls. “I wasn’t expecting much. But when I finally rode here - my mind was blown.”

Inspired by the region’s untapped potential, ROAD TO DESOLATION was born. A race which sought to put Graaf Reinet on the map not only for internationals, but locals too.
