Timbercity Red Hill Marathon

Timbercity Red Hill Marathon 42.2km Marathon; 36km Classic, 13km Challenge 5km Fun Run; Road Race In 2008, a massive veld fire swept over the route resulting in road closures.

The first Red Hill Classic was run almost half a century ago as a training run for the Peninsula Marathon. No one could find a suitable short cut so, instead of a customary 20 mile (32km) marathon-prep course, the distance was set at 36km. In 1984, when the Two Oceans Marathon introduced qualifying marathon criteria for their event, a six kilometre loop was added for those who wanted to extend the

mselves from the 36k Classic to a full marathon (and has been a permanent fixture at the race since 1992). The route has remained constant over all this time save for two exceptions:
The start line and first three kilometres has shifted around the perpetual roadworks to upgrade Kommetjie Road and Ou Kaapse Weg. However, Fish Hoek AC has built up a good relationship with the construction company and in 2019 they had a team working throughout the night to resurface the road for the runners – finishing up and providing the clearance to run just ten minutes before the race started. People joke about building aeroplanes in the sky but the Red Hill race committee did just that – organising a new route on race morning and only finalising the marathon route after the race had already started. There is an excellent account of just how everyone pulled together here. The 2008 event was something of a defining moment for the club and since then the race medal and club logo were redesigned to include the three flames to commemorate the experience.

Love seeing smiling faces with medal at the finish line.

Not sure about you, but we are missing the race day vibes this morning.

And while Fish Hoek Athletic Club is heading out on the road for our Long Saturday Run, doing the Kommetjie to Scarborough stretch of the race. We miss all runners that joined us last weekend.

Happy Saturday, and hopefully more medals will be added to everyone's collection soon!

A huge thank you to the logistic team at Timbercity that worked so hard to get everything out on the road for the race. They were supported by local businesses and schools giving vehicles for the deliveries.

Fish Hoek High School and Chapmans Hardware who loaned us bakkies for the water delivery, ADP Construction for loaning us two bakkies for cone and marker delivery, and Komicx Products for the ice buckets and ice to keep the bottles cold.

All of this played a vital role in making the race a success.

Runners LOVE a lucky draw, but that is not possible without brands donating incredible prizes!

This year not only did we have Fish Hoek Athletic Club, Timbercity and Manzi Water donate prizes but we had a host of incredible brands that stepped up, so we want to say a huge thank you too:

Rock Rabbit Sport for our King and Queen of the mountain prizes Rock Rabbit Sports
Shireen from Design 2 Run
The Bucklow Sock Art Collection David Bucklow Fine Artwork

Our lucky draw is getting better each year! Can't wait to see what 2027 has line up!

This year the Timbercity Red Hill Marathon had a big ambition.

To be completely Plastic Free in our races, this was only made possible by our Water Partner - MANZI Water

They matched our ambition side by side, partnered to build more of the water dispensing system that we trialled in 2025, and we had extremely positive responses from runners saying that the water in the systems was easy to access and ICE cold for the whole race.

We are so proud the partnership we have formed with Manzi Water, and so grateful to their team for being as passionate as we are about plastic free solutions.
