Day One | IOMMa Showcases

Hiphop is a beautiful culture. A tool for empowerment. A force that continues to amplify the voices of those brave enough to take the mic.

Intentional or not, IOMMa opened the night with Hiphop — and the women were the brave ones.

From India, WILD WILD WOMEN delivered a powerful performance rooted deeply in culture and identity, shattering any stereotypes or expectations I may have carried into the room.

From Tanzania, Frida Amani evoked the spirit of the Dahomey Amazons with strength, presence, and purpose. That stage was hers. I would bet a small fortune that she is the next big thing.

And from South Africa, Yugen Blakrok transported us somewhere beyond the ordinary — as if we had boarded a spaceship and journeyed through sound, poetry, and imagination.

Yep. We travelled tonight.

Building New Creative Pathways Across the Indian Ocean

Representing The Music Imbizo and South Africa at the Indian Ocean Music Market (IOMMA) in Réunion, we are engaging in important conversations about the future of cultural exchange, creative collaboration, and music industry development across the Indian Ocean region.

This year’s gathering places a strong focus on South Africa, highlighted by a cooperation agreement between South Africa, IOMMA, and partner nations aimed at strengthening cultural ties and unlocking new opportunities for the creative sector.

For Durban, a city strategically connected to the Indian Ocean network, this presents exciting possibilities. From artist exchanges and touring opportunities to international collaborations and market access, stronger relationships with Réunion, Mozambique, India, Australia, and other Indian Ocean nations can create meaningful opportunities for musicians and creative entrepreneurs.

We are proud to represent Durban and The Music Imbizo while working to ensure that these international partnerships translate into tangible opportunities for artists, businesses, and the broader creative economy back home.

The Music Imbizo Creative Programme.

Three months in, the journey continues.

Through the Mapping The Creative Sector sessions, hosted by participants of The Music Imbizo Creative Programme and supported by NEFCISA, we are creating spaces for learning, dialogue, collaboration and growth.

From industry conversations and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing to community engagement and creative networking, these sessions are helping 40 young creatives gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities, challenges and pathways within the creative economy.

As we reach the three-month mark, we are inspired by the commitment, curiosity and leadership emerging from this group. The future of the creative sector depends on informed, connected and empowered young professionals—and that is exactly what we are building.
