DID YOU KNOW:

the mountains around Clarens can appear to change colour?

The sandstone of the Eastern Free State comes alive in changing light. In the early morning and late afternoon, the rock can shift visually from deep reds and burnt orange to warm golden tones. Nature was doing light art around Clarens long before we were. 😉

✨ WHAT’S IN THE BOX? 👀

Wondering what Rogier Bleys is holding? We have some very exciting news to share — and we’re proud to reveal it during Clarens Cinema: When the Light Changes.

🎬 Friday, 25 September 2026
🕓 16:00–17:15
📍 Protea Hotel Clarens

Following the film screenings and a Q&A with the filmmakers, Rogier Bleys and Wilhelm Pelser will join us for a short expert discussion about access to light in Clarens — the challenges still faced by the township and possible solar-powered streetlighting solutions.

The announcement is part of the Light Legacy projects, an initiative by Worldvisuals South Africa bringing projects to Clarens and Khubutswana that aim to create a positive and lasting impact beyond the festival itself.

And what exactly is inside that box? 💡
Join us at Clarens Cinema to find out!

Experience the magic of the night sky through cinematic visuals, guided full moon observations, and captivating stories that reveal the beauty, science, and mythology of the cosmos.

Reflection of Knowledge brings together leading voices in science, astronomy, and astrotourism to explore how the night sky has shaped our understanding of who we are and our place in the universe.
This engaging evening of ideas and discussion explores the beauty of Clarens’ dark skies, our perception of time and light, the growing opportunities of astrotourism, and the importance of preserving the region’s exceptional night sky.

The conversation also considers the potential for Clarens to achieve Dark Sky accreditation and what this could mean for the town’s future.
