Slam City to Robben Island 🏝️

Last Friday, we were invited by Minister of DHET Higher Education Buti Manamela to Robben Island for the -Sobukwe Leadership Camp.

For us, the island was transformed from a site of historical trauma into a space of possibility. Our co-founders, Thapelo Tharaga and Zizipho Bam, shared insights on how the creative economy and artistic expression can harness stronger leadership. The energy was topped off by a powerful performance from Slam Champion Vusu Mpofu

Just as Higher Health SA nurtures student leaders, Slam City is dedicated to cultivating creatives who lead in their fields. This year, our mission is clear, to bring poetry to every campus, community, and home.

πŸŽ™οΈπŸŽ™οΈGet your tickets 🎫 for the last slam this Saturday .obs and catch Hlombe as she closes us off for the year. πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

Hlombe is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in live performance. Her passion for music ignited at a young age when she joined her primary school’s musical choir. In January 2015, she advanced her skills as a trainee at the Rainbow Arts Organisation, where she got exposed into music composition and theatre.

Her music is a fusion of Ukombela/Isingqi-a traditional African rhythm- & African jazz, accompanied by the resonant tones of uHadi. This soundscape reflects her belief that music is a divine gift from her ancestors, as means of communication between her and the world. Her songwriting often reflects her spiritual journey, self seeking and serving as a reminder that, despite feeling alone or lost, she is connected to a lineage of those who have walked this path before. To her, music is not a new creation but a continuation of a rich, ancestral tradition.

Hlombe has performed at notable venues such as Kulo Summer Festival, Selective Live, Homecoming Center, KAYA CafΓ©, Villa Viva, NostalgiaForYou and Colab 22. In 2023, she also appeared on Cape Town TV's HomeGrown, further showcasing her talents. November 2024 she graduated from Bridges For Music from a 5 months course, covering music production, Entrepreneurship & Mindfulness, solidifying her commitment to personal and professional growth in the music industry.
