100 Miler in Cape Town

100 Miler in Cape Town Cape Town is a great place to run. It needs a 100 mile run - those 160.934 km - to help get the most out of it.

Unfortunately with reluctance and regret I have to advise that there will be no 100 Mystical Miles in 2017.

Apologies for not meeting my self imposed deadline for the entry form ... not all the sign-offs are been received. And now a long weekend ... I'll keep you posted.

06/04/2017

Here we go ... entry forms out by next week Wednesday. Note again ... this will not be an ordinary run. Runners will have to be self-reliant and provide their own own nutrition and hydration besides water. It's all going to be in the race information that comes with the entry form.

Okay things will be happening faster from now. Here is a link to the route now with approvals outstanding. http://www.mappedometer.com/?maproute=592438.
The mountain part is fixed.
Take the elevation gain and loss as an indication rather than a precise measurement, but note the route does go from sea level to 1000 m down again with lots of ups and downs on the way to the end.
Don't worry that the distance is slightly under what it needs to be.
Once the route has been better measures and approved the start or finish will be adjusted to make up any shortfall.
Note also that that there will be Plan B and C routes should Chapman's Peak Drive, Table Mountain or both be impassable on event day.

We now have a TMNP route approved as part of the run, the mission critical part of the event. More details one the route soon but it will have a loop around, up and over Table Mountain. Final approval will be given when a few more requirements including an Environmental Management Plan are met. But that is a controllable process.
The big issue is that the event date will change to 29 and 30 July the week before the dates of 5 and 6 August 2017 which were the original planned.
But now that the route has been approved we know the date *will change* as we were not able to use the TMNP on the dates we wanted.
All is good now and we can start the entry process ... more on all to follow ...

This morning's great news: excellent progress is being made with TMNP about the route in their area. But what is going to happen is that the event will have to be one weekend earlier. Work still needs to be done on the details but Table Mountain Mountain can be in the run. More on this during the day.

100 Mystical Miles update. Time rushes by ... can hardly believe we are into February already.

The big issue (in process) for the 100 Mystical Miles is to finalise the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) part of the run. Everything else depends on it.

A cornerstone of the 100 Mystical Miles is that it should include as much running in the the nature reserve areas as possible.

Running in the TMNP area can only be done with approval from the TMNP authorities which have constraints - among no event can start in the part before 07h40, no event is allowed (I presume with the exception of the Bat Run) to go on after dark, which is 18h00 in the winter months, no route may be run twice, we have to avoid shared routes of shared activities) e.g. where mountain biking is allowed. No new events on Lions Head. These are quite hefty constraints.

What this means is that the TMNP part of the run has to be at the beginning of the event - there is no way to have a later section without some of the runners (given the expected spread of fast, normal and slow like me runners) being in the TMNP area after dark or in the dark early morning.

If we were all just going for a jog at the same time, it might be fine but an organised event must get permission and comply with the constraints.

Discussions with TMNP are ongoing and I really hope finalise this soon. You'll be kept *posted*!

One good thing is that running (the training if you want to call it that) for the event is far less constrained - we can all run when we can.

More soon

Some of Saturday's Red Hill Marathon was part of the 100 Mystical Miles route. The pic shows the part of the route between Simon's Town and Fish Hoek - taken on way down the steep cambers of Red Hill, which is not on the route (unless there is an emergency) but still they were

Getting in a little beach running practice of the 100 Mystical Miles - away from the white Cape Town beaches but still good.
These posts might be erratic over the holiday season but the run next year is committed, definite.

It's not that by running out there you get it all, you just get more - for a little panting and sweating, and maybe not even that when its one of those recovery runs like mine this morning, where you end wanting to run more and get even more of the mid-summerish moonset-tan and it's pinkling counterpart.
