Transnet Freight Rail is back in profit. But is South Africa’s mining logistics system ready for its next phase?

Its latest results point to growing momentum in the recovery of South Africa’s freight logistics system, with rail volumes rising, private-sector participation expanding and billions being invested in infrastructure.

The headline numbers:
🔹R4.6 billion profit vs a R1.9 billion loss
🔹167.9 Mt railed, up 4.9%
🔹11 train operating companies signed Rail Access Agreements
🔹R23.3 billion invested in infrastructure and equipment
🔹R14.8 billion in strategic rail and port funding approved by National Treasury

For the mining industry, the direction is encouraging. But 167.9 Mt remains below Transnet’s 180 Mt target, and well below the 226 Mt railed in 2017.
The next test is whether rail reform, private investment and infrastructure spending can translate into significantly more reliable capacity for mineral exports.

Minerals Council South Africa CEO Mzila Mthenjane says Transnet is “moving in the right direction”, while Transnet chair Dr Andile Sangqu believes the company has “turned the corner”.

So, is the logistics recovery finally moving from stabilisation to growth?
