As Mining Indaba 2026 highlighted, the future of mining will be built on partnerships

One company putting that theme into practice is Tharisa, which recently celebrated its first underground blast at the Tharisa Mine in South Africa. The transition from open-pit to underground mining has long been part of the company's strategy and is expected to extend the life of the operation by more than 60 years.

What's notable is how this next phase is being enabled through collaboration across the value chain. From its partnership with Cementation Africa on underground development and workforce upskilling to its work with Dwyka Labs to create a digitally enabled "smart mine", Tharisa's growth strategy is increasingly partnership-driven.

The story reflects a broader trend across the mining sector: major projects are becoming less about standalone ex*****on and more about building ecosystems of partners that share risk, expertise and create long-term value.

It is also an example of how our MI26 theme, "Stronger Together: Progress through Partnerships," naturally evolves into our MI27 theme, "Stronger Together: Partnerships in Practice."

Exactly one year after its separation from Anglo American, Valterra Platinum has moved to positioning itself as one of the mining industry's most closely watched independent producers.

Valterra completed its demerger from Anglo American on 31 May 2025; and began trading on the London Stock Exchange on 2 June 2025 under the ticker VALT, alongside its primary Johannesburg listing.

One year later, Valterra has delivered its first full set of independent results, completed the establishment of its standalone corporate identity, strengthened its balance sheet and begun laying the foundations for the next generation of growth projects.

For the platinum industry, the company's first year has offered a test case of whether a pure-play PGM champion can create more value outside a diversified mining house.

28/05/2026

Mining Indaba extends its sincere congratulations to Hon. Dr. Monica Musenero Musanza on her appointment as Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development.

At a time when the global conversation around minerals is becoming increasingly interconnected with industrialisation, infrastructure, regional collaboration and long-term economic transformation, leadership that combines technical expertise, international experience and systems-level thinking will be more important than ever.

Dr. Musenero’s extensive experience working across Uganda, the DRC, Sierra Leone and wider regional health and coordination ecosystems reflect a deep understanding of complex stakeholder environments and cross-border collaboration under pressure, capabilities that are becoming increasingly relevant in a rapidly evolving strategic minerals landscape.

We also warmly congratulate Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro on her reappointment as Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Development (Minerals), reaffirming continuity in leadership within Uganda’s mineral development agenda.

Mining Indaba also recognises and appreciates the service and contribution of the outgoing Minister, Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa, whose leadership has contributed to Uganda’s evolving energy and mineral development trajectory.

Uganda continues to strengthen its position within Africa’s evolving mining and energy landscape through strategic policy direction, regional cooperation and a growing commitment to resource-led industrialisation and value addition.

As Mining Indaba advances toward under the theme “Stronger Together: Partnerships in Practice,” we look forward to continued engagement with the Government of Uganda in fostering partnerships that drive investment, unlock sustainable mineral development and accelerate shared prosperity across the continent.

We wish both Ministers every success in their leadership and service.
