As Mining Indaba 2026 highlighted, the future of mining will be built on partnerships
One company putting that theme into practice is Tharisa, which recently celebrated its first underground blast at the Tharisa Mine in South Africa. The transition from open-pit to underground mining has long been part of the company's strategy and is expected to extend the life of the operation by more than 60 years.
What's notable is how this next phase is being enabled through collaboration across the value chain. From its partnership with Cementation Africa on underground development and workforce upskilling to its work with Dwyka Labs to create a digitally enabled "smart mine", Tharisa's growth strategy is increasingly partnership-driven.
The story reflects a broader trend across the mining sector: major projects are becoming less about standalone ex*****on and more about building ecosystems of partners that share risk, expertise and create long-term value.
It is also an example of how our MI26 theme, "Stronger Together: Progress through Partnerships," naturally evolves into our MI27 theme, "Stronger Together: Partnerships in Practice."
