INTERIOR SHIFT: How Residential Design Is Being Redefined in 2026 | Future Talks, brought to you by Oggie Oak Flooring

Interior architecture has become one of the most influential forces shaping how we experience residential space today. No longer confined to decoration or finish, it informs how we move, feel and live within our homes, balancing spatial intelligence with material integrity and a sensitivity to everyday life.

In this Future Talks session, ARRCC Senior Associate Quintin Gilman draws on a portfolio of internationally recognised residential projects to explore how these principles are translated into practice.

The conversation examines how contemporary interiors can balance architectural rigour with emotional resonance, and why the most enduring design solutions are often rooted in thoughtful, considered responses rather than passing trends.

Thursday 25 June, 13:00.

No separate booking is required for Future Talks, but this is one worth arriving early for.

“Soft Life slips between meanings.”

In a recent Mail & Guardian feature, Lesego Chepape reflected on Decorex Africa’s 2026 theme in a way that brings the emotion of it to the surface. Soft Life is not only about how a space looks. It is about what we are longing for in our spaces: more ease, more feeling, more beauty, more softness, more room to breathe.

For some, Soft Life speaks to calm, comfort and atmosphere. For others, it reaches deeper: a quiet response to exhaustion, pressure and the inherited urgency of survival. A desire for life to feel less hard.

That is why the theme matters beyond the design vocabulary. When media begins to reflect on Soft Life in this way, it shows that the conversation is not only about interiors, furniture or finishes.

It is about culture. About how we want to live. About what home is being asked to hold.

At Decorex Africa and 100% Design Africa, Soft Life becomes something visitors can move through and define for themselves: through lighting, material, furniture, interiors, talks, craft, kitchens, textiles, objects and rooms.

Not one definition.

A set of possibilities.

FUTURE TALKS / LRNCE: the making of a design world.

Founded in Marrakech in 2013 by Laurence Leenaert and Ayoub Boualam, LRNCE has grown from a deeply personal studio practice into an international design presence spanning ceramics, textiles, objects, interiors, clothing and artistic collaboration.

The work is rooted in Morocco, but not held in the past. It draws from craft, place, colour, pattern, material and the hand, then turns those elements into a language that feels unmistakably contemporary.

At Future Talks, brought to you by Oggie Oak Flooring, Laurence and Ayoub will share the journey of the studio since its founding: how a practice becomes a world, how that world travels, and why work grounded in personality, place and making continues to resonate so widely.

See LRNCE at Future Talks during 100% Design Africa at Decorex Africa Cape Town.

You wanted more lighting, so prepare to be illuminated, because lighting is one of the most exciting categories to look for at Decorex Africa Cape Town this year.

Start with FloodLight, a new feature developed with spatial lighting designer Martin Döller, bringing together Mash.T Design Studio, TheUrbanative, MOS Lighting, Joe Paine Studio, Studio Ananta, Bored, Mema and LDA Lighting.

Then look for Stephen Pikus Design, whose one-of-a-kind handcrafted lighting works with recycled glass, wire and industrial metals to create pieces that sit somewhere between salvage, sculpture and atmosphere.

Lighting also appears inside Ten x Ten, with two focused categories that includes leading global lighting houses alongside the best local names.

So yes, if lighting is on your list, Decorex Cape Town is worth looking up for.

At Decorex Africa Cape Town, the restaurants and cafés are never just practical stops. They extend the world of the show.

This year, two of those pauses are shaped by brands whose identities are deeply tied to clay, but in very different ways. Klay Bistro, designed by Klay South Africa, brings the language of architectural terracotta into the room: a material world built around fired clay bricks, screen blocks, flooring, cladding and the warmth that those surfaces carry into space.

Café by Rialheim, meanwhile, comes from a more artisanal place. From its studio at Clairvaux Estate in Robertson, Rialheim has built a South African design house around African clay, handcraft, storytelling and the idea that everyday objects should carry feeling as well as function. Its ceramics, lighting, textiles and table culture make a natural fit for a café shaped around pause, ritual and touch.

Two ceramic houses, then, each working with their material in a different key: one more architectural, one more intimate, both reminding us that even a coffee or lunch stop at Decorex can still be part of the design conversation.

For interior designers, the best part of Decorex Africa isn't just the physical experiences, but the conversations around what's unfolding.

This year’s Future Talks programme, brought to you by Oggie, includes thoughtful sessions about how interiors are changing: from The Feel of Home and Building Wellbeing to Material Comforts, Experiential Lighting, and the world of LRNCE.

Together, they point to a broader shift in the discipline, away from image-making alone and toward spaces shaped by mood, tactility, emotional intelligence, and a more considered sense of how people want to live.

If you're in the interiors universe, this year's Future Talks programme is a reminder that the real value of visiting Decorex is not just in what you see, but the ideas you leave with.
