Save the date! 💍 June 2, 1847, was the first known instance of Felix Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” being played at a wedding.

Organist Samuel Reay performed the piece at St Peter’s Church in Tiverton, England, for the marriage of Dorothy Carew and Tom Daniel. 🎹

The Wedding March, written by Mendelssohn in 1842, later gained popularity as a music selection for weddings when Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, Victoria, Princess Royal, chose the piece for her 1858 marriage to Prince Frederick William of Prussia. 🕊️

F***y Hensel-Mendelssohn (born 1805) was a talented pianist who composed more than 450 works. But, due to “social conventions” (a kind term for “sexism”), some of her works were published under her brother’s name. 📝

Growing up in a bourgeois German household, F***y was discouraged from a career in music, her father telling her at age 14: “Music will perhaps become [Felix's] profession, while for you it can and must be only an ornament". Oh, brother…

F***y’s younger brother, Felix, was also a talented pianist and composer, and six of F***y’s compositions would be published under his name in order to preserve perceived gender roles of the time.

But F***y had a positive relationship with her family, and she and Felix would often perform together as part of the Sunday concert series her family hosted out of their home. 🎹

F***y even helped Felix with his compositions, providing feedback and constructive criticism, which he actively sought out.

It wasn’t until F***y’s husband, artist Wilhelm Hensel, encouraged F***y to have her works published that, in 1946, she finally published a collection of her songs under her married name: F***y Hensel. 🎼
