Launching in 2018, Northern Ireland’s Linen Biennale celebrates the past, present and future landscape of linen through an extended arts festival, presented and hosted by multiple venues across the region. Every two years R-Space Gallery, Lisburn will lead on a three-month festival of arts, craft and design, including exhibitions and installations, conference, master-classes, and performances unde

r the key themes of Recall, Rethink and Reform. The Linen Biennale will stimulate new thinking about Ireland’s oldest textile products: flax and linen. Reaching out to the last of a generation who worked in the heyday of Ulster’s linen production, the Linen Biennale forms a bridge to connect our internationally renowned linen heritage with contemporary uses and highlight the very best in cutting-edge developments from around the world. Showing linen’s applications within arts, craft, design and technology from past, present and future perspectives gives the linen story relevance to a wide range of audiences locally, nationally and internationally. Presenting a collective story of Ulster linen in an international context will stimulate new ideas and developments in Northern Ireland. The conference takes place 3rd and 4th October 2018 in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.

Join us in R-Space Gallery tomorrow 2pm - 4pm for the opening reception of Flaxen - a solo exhibition by acclaimed textile artist Alice Fox.

We've had a wonderful few days installing the show and getting to know Alice. It's an honour have her feature in the Linen Biennale 2025. Her new body of work incorporates flax in all its stages - from whole dried stems to unspun fibre, and exploring both the plant’s strength and fragility in a textured, structural celebration of flax.

Come along to see this work up-close and personal (the scale might surprise you!) and get the opportunity to hear from Alice about her many processes, research areas and interests. We'll have some refreshments at hand too!

The property has witnessed over three hundred years of change, reflecting the social and political history that has profoundly shaped Lisburn. The tour begins at 2pm and lasts approximately one hour.
