Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition

Named one of "America's Top-10 Gran Fondos," the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo welcomes you to Harrisonburg, Virginia for an exciting weekend of community, challenging rides, and charitable impact. Register at BikeReg.com/GranFondo

NEW for 2024, the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo is a Gran Fondo National Series partner event. Riders participating in the Gran, Medio, and Piccolo routes can earn Gran Fondo Nation

al Series points. The event is a qualifier for the 2025 Gran Fondo National Championship and also offers Cancer Journeys Foundation mountains and sprint competitions. The Alpine Loop was named after the glorious mountain top meadows, winding climbs and hillside farms reminiscent of Austrian, German and Swiss settings. This magnificent scenery is the backdrop for the most challenging and adventurous Gran Fondo in the United States. The route begins in Harrisonburg, Virginia and covers approximately 110 miles featuring approximately 10,000 feet of climbing, including the steep unpaved challenge of Fultz Gap. The Alpine Loop route is not recommended for riders who are aiming to complete their first "century" ride or those who do not have prior experience riding on unpaved roads or major mountain descents. A Challenging Route for All Riders
The Shenandoah Mountain Century, Shenandoah Mountain Adventure, Mount Solon Metric Century, and Valley View Challenge routes encourage and challenge cyclists of all abilities to join in the festivities of the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo. These courses showcase the idyllic scenery that makes Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Virginia and Pendleton County, West Virginia famed riding destinations.

Tour of Virginia – 7-Day Road Tour
Skill/Fitness: Intermediate (~60 miles per day)
This journey blends rolling climbs, smooth descents, and quiet backroads with the character of Virginia’s small towns, Civil War landmarks, and Appalachian heritage. In late September, the Shenandoah Valley and Reddish K**b (a favorite from the Alpine Loop!) open the door to the Allegheny Mountains. Early fall colors sweep across the ridges, the air turns crisp, and the valley becomes a cyclist’s dream.
Highlights of this adventure include:
Highland County, Virginia’s “Little Switzerland.
The ride from Monterey to Hot Springs,
Fort Lewis and beyond — a stretch unlike any other

Shenandoah & Alleghenies 6-Day Gravel Tour
Skill/Fitness: Advanced

Evenings bring fresh made meals, historic inns, and mountain hospitality — the perfect way to recover after big days on the bike. You’ll stay in cozy guesthouses and historic hotels, surrounded by bike-friendly communities and guided by a seasoned local team.

If you’ve participated in the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo, you’re invited to join at an exclusive 15% off when you use the code: GRANFONDOESC

Alpine Loop Gran Fondo 2025 Update

Friends,
For the past 14 years, the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo has marked the turning of the season - from the heat of summer to the first golden leaves of fall, from purple ridgelines to fields of corn ready for harvest. This time of year has always been filled with the excitement of final details: rallying volunteers, unboxing jerseys and medals, and preparing to welcome riders to share in the adventure.

But 2025 is different. The past seven months have brought some of the most significant personal and professional changes of my adult life. While I’m not ready to close the chapter on the Gran Fondo, I also haven’t had the space or energy to give it the attention and ex*****on it deserves this year. There will be no official Alpine Loop Gran Fondo in 2025.

That said, I don’t want the spirit of the Gran Fondo to pause. Harrisonburg and the Shenandoah Valley remain an incredible destination for autumn adventures. Our marquee routes are always available at www.alpineloopgranfondo.com, and I encourage you to take on an adventure that matches your strengths and your ability to self-support. If you do, I truly hope you’ll reach out - I’d love nothing more than to send you off on a ride, or greet you with a high-five or a hug when you return.

Looking ahead, I’m leaving the door open. The Alpine Loop Gran Fondo’s story isn’t over, and I’m grateful for the space to find the right balance for the future. In the meantime, please stay connected through Jeremiah’s (Jeremiah Bishop and Bishop Training) social channels for other adventures and opportunities to ride together

And finally, as always, let this message serve as an important reminder: prostate cancer early detection saves lives. If you have a prostate and are 35 or older, schedule an annual PSA screening and track your numbers over time. ProstateTracker.org offers a simple, free tool to set up reminders and monitor your results. Please take care of yourself—it matters.

Thank you for your understanding, for your encouragement, and for the community we’ve built together. It’s been nothing short of magical, and I look forward to what comes next.

With gratitude,
Erin Bishop
Alpine Loop Gran Fondo event director
