A couple of June 6, 1944 D-Day Reflections: #1 -- Columbus, Nebraska is the birthplace of Andrew Jackson Higgins who designed the WWII landing crafts known as "The Higgins Boats". If you read the plaque next to his bronze statue, you will see that President Eisenhower named him "the man who won the war for us". This plaque and statue are on Normandy Beach --as was my father on that June 6. On that day, he was Lt. (jg) Sharpe, not Coach Sharpe; and he was overseeing one of Higgins LST's in the third wave of the invasion. #2 -- This second picture is of all WWII returning Veterans. They are wearing Nebraska University Baseball uniforms, and a Region Six Trophy is being displayed by the team's Coach Sharpe. Every single one of these players were wearing military uniforms and invading the Normandy Beaches on this day in 1944. They returned to become the first team to restart university baseball competition. They also were the first to receive G-Bill funding.
