Vietnam Offroad: North to South | EP. 1 – The Journey Begins

Two 4WD vehicles leave Hanoi to begin a 15-day expedition across Vietnam. In Episode 1, the team completes the final checks, rolls out of the city, and quickly discovers that this journey will demand more than simply following a route.

DAY 1 - HANOI TO THANH HOA: THE EXPEDITION HAS OFFICIALLY LEFT THE CITY BEHIND.

Yesterday, 20 August, our Trans-Vietnam 4WD journey finally rolled out of Hanoi. The morning began with a quick briefing beside the vehicles routes checked, convoy order clear, last questions answered and then the city slowly disappeared in the mirrors.

The first day was never meant to be the toughest part of the expedition, but Vietnam gave us an early reminder of why we travel by 4WD. Smooth roads gave way to rural tracks, rice fields, roadworks and a few sections where “the road ahead” was still very much a work in progress. By the time the convoy reached Thanh Hoa, the clean vehicles from Hanoi were already beginning to look like they belonged on an expedition.

Day 1 was about finding our rhythm, testing the vehicles and getting everyone comfortable before the real distance starts to build. Hanoi is behind us. The road south is now open and this is only the beginning.

We pulled off the road and stepped into a small local workshop where rice is still turned into noodles by hand, then hung in long pale strands across bamboo poles to dry. No showroom, no polished demonstration, no one pretending this is anything more than an ordinary working day. And that was exactly why everyone stayed longer than expected.

Our guests watched the process up close, asked questions, tasted what had just been made, and ended up gathered around the table with the kind of curiosity that no museum display can really create. You begin to understand that food here is not just something served at lunch; it carries family habits, patience, weather, harvests, and years of doing the same thing well.
