Continental Square Ballroom

Continental Square Ballroom A wedding and special event venue in the heart of downtown York, PA. Part of the Fêtewell collection

Things we've found inside 1 N. George Street so far: a lucky penny in the floor, an old bank vault envelope, a vintage Reese's box, and the First National Bank logo hiding under years of gunk.

If you ever banked at the First National Bank or Citizens Bank on Continental Square, you know this 97-year-old building has stories. Restoring it means it keeps handing us little pieces of them. Most of it is junk. The ceiling? That one we're keeping. Picture your first dance underneath it.

What do you think we'll find next?

A bit of York history for your Wednesday.

In 1777, with the British holding Philadelphia, the Continental Congress moved to York for nine months. For that stretch, York was the capital of the United States, and the Continental Treasury operated on the corner of what we now call Continental Square.

In 1929 the First National Bank was built on that same spot. Now we're restoring that bank as Continental Square Ballroom.

We think a building's history makes a celebration better, and this building has more than most.

BBQ, tacos, pierogies, sushi, your grandmother's lasagna. At Continental Square Ballroom, the menu is your call.

You can bring any licensed and insured caterer. If you'd rather not search, our preferred partners are invitation-only and chosen for the quality of their food and service.

A tip for any venue tour: ask whether you can bring any caterer or only ones from their list, and whether there's a fee if you bring your own.

What would be on your menu? Tell us in the comments.

Right now, 1 N. George Street is just walls.

Dust on the terrazzo, light through the arched windows, a 97-year-old vault, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling 41 feet and 10 inches overhead. Nothing has been touched yet.

People ask what we see in it. Honestly, these walls stay walls until someone says "I do" in front of them. That's the part we're working toward: the first ceremony, the first dance, the first time a room that has sat empty since 2012 is full again.

Continental Square Ballroom opens January 2028, and we're saving somebody a Saturday.

Every photo in this video is a styled shoot at the future Continental Square Ballroom. Not one real wedding yet.

This is how you market a venue that hasn't opened. You bring in the best vendors in the area, they create content and get to test the bounds of their creativity, and couples get to see the space styled before they ever book a tour. Real weddings start in 2028, and we're booking now. If you've been waiting to see it in person, now's the time.

And if you're a wedding vendor in the York, PA area, we know a place that's offering free styled shoot windows before it opens its doors 😉

Huge thank you to every vendor who believed in this building before anyone said "I do" in it.

Hard Hat Diaries, Episode 3: look what turned up on the upper floors of 1 N. George Street.

It's a hand-cranked dumbwaiter, with a wooden box, a crank, and a rope running up a metal shaft. To be clear, the upper floors aren't part of Continental Square Ballroom. Our landlord is turning them into a 16-room boutique hotel, which is a separate business. We just got to see this piece of the old First National Bank before their work begins. We still can't believe we get to work in a building like this.

If you worked or banked here, you might know: what did this dumbwaiter carry? Tell us in the comments, and tag anyone who might remember.

Downstairs, we're restoring the bank into Continental Square Ballroom, a wedding and event venue opening January 2028.

Hard Hat Diaries, Episode 2.

The first thing everyone does when they walk in is look up. We've always called it a 40-foot ceiling, so we finally measured it: 41 feet, 10 inches, barrel-vaulted and coffered. It's 97 years old, from back when banks were built to impress. You can't build its replacement today. Nobody would pay for it. We can't wait to watch someone's first dance under it.

Right now the room is empty and dusty, waiting on its next chapter. We'll post the progress here as it happens, including the messy middle.

Tell us in the comments: what part of the building do you want to see next?

Couples ask us what they'd even do with 16 hours. So we mapped out a sample day.

Hair and makeup start at 8am in the dressing suites, in the same building as everything else. Vendors load in mid-morning with room to breathe. Photos, ceremony, dinner, and dancing all get real time. Breakdown happens at the end of the night, not during your last song.

The point isn't to fill every hour. It's that nothing gets rushed because of a rental window.

The 16-hour window runs 8am to midnight on full-day rentals. Rehearsals are complimentary with a full-day rental, too.

Questions about how it works? Drop them below and we'll answer them.

Welcome to Hard Hat Diaries, our running log of bringing 1 N. George Street back to life. Episode 1: there was something under all that gunk.

While cleaning up inside, we poured a little water on a stubborn patch and started scraping. Out came the monogram of the First National Bank, the bank that built this building on Continental Square in 1929.

If you ever banked here, you probably walked right over it. It's staying, and you'll walk in right over it.

Some people save a brick from the buildings they restore. I made a dress.

This curtain came down from one of the arched windows at 1 N. George Street, the 1929 First National Bank building we're turning into Continental Square Ballroom. Instead of tossing it, I cut it, sewed it, and wore it.

That's the whole idea behind this project: the best parts of a building deserve a second life. The vault, the glass, the ceiling, and apparently the drapes too.

Continental Square Ballroom opens on Continental Square in January 2028.
