317 Main Community Music Center A space where self-confidence grows, friendships form, communities find connection, and where music serves as a bridge between generations and cultures.

317 Main Street Community Music Center offers a wide variety of music programs and services in a community setting to make music as widely available to as many people as possible. We offer private and semi-private lessons for 18+ instruments and voice: guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin, bass, flute, fiddle, cello, drums, saxaphone, and much more. Our students range in age from birth-101. Lessons and ensembles are available in-person or online via Zoom.

317 also offers ensembles and classes designed for the smallest musicians (Little Roots) to musicians looking to finally learn how to play (Deep Roots) and everything in between. Financial aid is available! Fox & The Fiddle, our onsite cafe, is open Monday through Friday 8:00am-8:00pm

Join us on October 17 for a special family concert celebrating the joyful, syncopated sounds of Scott Joplin and ragtime music, featuring author and illustrator Stephen Costanza.

Stephen is an acclaimed Maine-based author and illustrator, and comes to 317 to highlight “King of Ragtime: The Story of Scott Joplin”, a picture book biography that’s earned starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, and Booklist. The program features music and storytelling, as well as books and original artwork for sale.

Stephen lives and works on North Haven, an island in Penobscot Bay, and is a regular visitor to schools and libraries, where he shares his love of storytelling, illustration, and (his words) “rusty piano playing”.

Two of the world’s great mandolinists are coming to 317 Main! French virtuoso Vincent B**r-Demander (Vincent B**r-Demander) and Neapolitan mandolinist Fabio Gallucci are back in the U.S. touring their album LIVE in USA, and we’re thrilled to welcome them for a concert and a very special masterclass on October 30.

The Masterclass | 4pm - 6pm | $50, includes admission to the concert

Join Vincent and Fabio for a hands-on masterclass in classical mandolin technique, with a focus on Vincent’s own music and the traditional and popular music of Southern Italy. You’ll work on technique, interpretation, and the rhythms and styles that give the music of the Italian South its unmistakable sound. Spots are limited, so sign up early!

The Concert | 7pm | $25, does not include admission to the workshop

The duo will play their own original compositions alongside arrangements of Nino Rota, Jacob do Bandolim, and more. Grounded in classical technique and full of the spirit of Italian and Brazilian music, it’s a rare chance to hear the mandolin and mandola played at the very highest level.

Vincent B**r-Demander is one of the most celebrated mandolinists performing today. Composers including Lalo Schifrin, Claude Bolling, Francis Lai, and Hamilton de Holanda have written concertos for him, and he’s performed with the Orchestre National de France, the Paris Opera, and many more. He teaches at the conservatories of Marseille and Liège.

Fabio Gallucci was born on the island of Ischia near Naples and has given more than 3,000 concerts around the world. He’s played with the Teatro di San Carlo, the Opéra Garnier, and Radio France, under conductors like Mstislav Rostropovich and Myung-Whun Chung. He has 18 recordings to his name and teaches at the Conservatoire Béziers Méditerranée in France.

We are thrilled to have Maine Public Classical / Maine Public / 317’s very own Sarah Tuttle back for “Songs From Here” Friday, October 2!

Together with Bridget Convey Pianist, they are celebrating 5 years of their program, which has always platformed 100% Maine-made music. Each year, they commission works from our state’s artists, composers, musicians, and more, and we have been so fortunate to host them for this fabulous event. This year’s program is a retrospective with selections from the past half decade!

And we are extra excited this year, as Sarah and Bridget will receive 100% of the proceeds from their concert, thanks to our new “Groundwork” initiative. Groundwork is our way of investing back into the people and organizations that make Maine such a special place, and we are happy to commit our physical, structural, and creative resources toward the growth and development of our state’s burgeoning artists, collectives, and non-profits!

Today in Portland Press Herald, 317’ers Mia Mastrogiacomo and Layla Stephenson talk about the impact Maine’s tucker pillsbury has on their growth and goals as a young musicians.

One of the things we care most about is supporting the full lifecycle of musicians—and one of the most important steps in that lifelong process is ensuring aspiring teenage musicians have the scaffolding they need to build and pursue their artistic vision and identity.

Witnessing how Mia and Layla are laying the creative foundations for their lives is what it’s all about, and we are fortunate to get to work with so many teens, adults, kids, and families throughout our state.

Thanks for being a role model, tucker pillsbury ❤️
