Ancient 🏛 Greek History 101:
Ancient Greek city-states, or poleis, were independent, sovereign countries that shared a common language, religion, and cultural identity. Spanning the Mediterranean from the Archaic to the Hellenistic periods, they were highly competitive and ranged widely in size, government, and societal values.
Major City-States:
Athèna: The birthplace of Western democracy and a major naval power, Athèna (aka Athens) prized education, philosophy, and the arts.
Spàrti: An oligarchic, highly militaristic society ruled by a dual monarchy, focused on physical endurance and a dominant infantry.
Thebes: Located in Boeotia, this powerful land-based state frequently vied with Athens and Sparta for dominance.
Corinthos: A wealthy, strategic coastal powerhouse that dominated trade routes and established numerous colonies.
With fewer than 3 (III) days to go, we are super excited for this race. We would love to thank the City of Wheaton and DuPage County for their support.
