Dear METG Colleagues, Members, and Friends:
It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that, out of an abundance of caution for the health and wellbeing of all students, directors, volunteers, and patrons, the METG is POSTPONING all events effective immediately and extending through April 6, 2020. This includes the upcoming Semi-Finals, State Finals, the METG Conference on Theater Education, and all programming sponsored by the Musical Theater Division (Marquee Awards).
As I discussed with our Board and Division Executive Council this evening, we have heard from a number of host sites and schools that are either cancelling or planning to cancel their participation. We need to continue to do what's in the best interest of ALL our member schools. The safety of all patrons and participants is paramount. I was clear earlier this week that we would not issue an organizational directive unless prompted by state or federal government entities. The Governor's state of emergency declaration, in addition to review of updated recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, have prompted us to take this unprecedented action.
Members of the organization are gathering on Saturday to prepare plans to reschedule many of the events cancelled as a result of the evolving public health situation. While I cannot promise a solution that will be universally acceptable to everyone, we will do our very best to develop workable solutions that recognize the outstanding student and adult work that makes this organization so successful. We will be in touch early next week with the results of this conversation.
I want to personally thank each of you for being so supportive and responsive these past few days. This was not an easy decision for the organization to make. As an alum of this festival (and a 21- year devotee) I have a deep love and respect for this distinguished tradition. I am heartbroken by the situation, but I know that we will come back stronger as a result of this adverse outcome.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns, or if you need additional information.
Sincerely,
Dennis
